“That Johnnie and Jude would meet women just like Momma,” Julie says, bringing Dad’s eyes straight to mine.
“You forget to tell me and your momma something?” Dad asks, and I take out my phone, pulling up the photos I’ve saved of Carly on it.
“Meet your soon to be daughter-in-law. As soon as we get this shit handled, I’m putting my ring on her finger.”
“And your baby in her belly,” Julie teases pulling a laugh from me as Dad’s brow lifts curiously my way.
“Might already be one there right now, so you can tell Mom you were right once I know Carly’s safe,” I add, not wanting Mom to be at my place all the time until this is over to keep her safe as well in case anyone learns Carly’s with me.
“Safe from what?” Aaron asks us, nodding at Doug in greeting. “I tried calling the office, then Jesse and Julie’s phones when I saw the lights still on here. When no one answered, I called your dad to see if he knew what was going on in here.”
“Since I didn’t and none of you answered me either, we headed in to see who was here, so start talking. If someone’s threatening my family, I need to know,” Dad added, and I nodded as they joined us.
We ran through what we knew with them, then did it again an hour later when the FBI arrived, extremely eager to get their hands on Paul McKay.
“We’ve been trying to make a connection between McKay and Ellis for two years now,” Investigator in Charge Pearson said, shaking his head when he saw the videos of McKay following Carly, as well as the photos from her phone that captured images of him. “With this, and the video of him at Ellis’ building, meeting with him in that club, his message to Carly to meet him and Paul there…we can take him down when we get our hands on McKay.”
“I agree with keeping the girl out of sight,” Agent Moore added. “If you can get us her house keys, we’ll bring in a decoy. Get someone that looks enough like Carly and get her inside her place. If McKay wants her as badly as it seems, he’ll come for her, and we’ll take him down.”
“Thank you,” I tell everyone after handing over her keys from her bag that I still had in my office. I wasn’t about to let her run off, back to her place where I couldn’t get near her. Intended to make a copy of her keys but wanted to get home to her more than even that tonight, thank fuck.
“Watch your back,” Pearson warns as I head towards my car to get home to my girl. It’s almost midnight and I’m sure she’s awake by now—even if I did wear her out earlier.
“Why does he need to watch his back?” Jesse asks, moving to my side protectively, despite being younger than me. He’s always been like this, and we all love him for it.
“If McKay’s been following her, seen you run into her multiple times, then he’ll be looking for you. Even though the times it’s happened seemed to be innocent, he knows she hasn’t been home for days, he may have checked out her friends and found she’s not with any of them, which begs the question, where is she now? Add that together with her telling Ellis that her boyfriend wouldn’t let her go to that club, him threatening her boyfriend, and if there’s any video of you picking her up in front of the club…” Pearson’s voice faded off as Davidson shook his head no at them.
“Only cameras on that street are owned by these guys,” Davidson says nodding towards us. “They’ve been helping me try to shut the club down after all of the allegations of what goes on in there.”
“We run them for the Cartwrights,” Kent added. “We scan for any other recording devices in the area daily. They don’t have any outside the place. The video we got from inside was from a ‘customer’ that’s actually one of our guys. Nothing in club policy prohibits the usage of recording devices inside the club, so we can use the footage in any legal proceedings.”
“Still, watch your back. It’ll take us a day or two to find someone to match Carly’s description well enough to fool McKay into showing his face. We’ll let you know when it’s going down,” Pearson said and I nodded, shaking his hand before turning towards my family.
“Go home, keep Carly safe so the rest of the family can meet her soon,” Jesse said, and I nodded, giving him a hug before getting one from Julie, Jude, and Dad as well.
“Don’t worry about the office, we can handle things and if we need your input, we’ll call you,” Julie added, making me smile at the sternness in the look she gave me.
“It’s not my favorite thing to do, but I can run any of the reports needed until you get back,” Jude offered as well.
“I have my laptop at home still. If you need something, just call or text and I can jump on. After all of this…”
“Your place right now is next to Carly, we know,” Dad assured me, giving me one last hug, before I headed home, finding Carly sitting on the couch in my shirt, worrying.
My lips claim hers before she can ask any questions, wanting one more night just with her before I let her know who’s after her. She lets out a token protest before relaxing into me, letting me take her up to bed, and make her mine all over again.
Chapter 7
Carly
Ilet out a soft sigh as Johnnie’s lips press soft kisses along my spine. It’s been two full days since he came home around midnight, kissing me back into bed, and we’ve spent the majority of the time since then here as well. Really, I’m not complaining about that—not in the least, but I am concerned with what’s going on, especially as it’s now Thursday, Brent’s deadline for me coming fast as the clock rolls over to ten a.m. now.
Every time I’ve tried to talk to him about it, he kisses me, distracting me from my worry until I’m coming hard—on his cock, on his fingers, on his mouth. It doesn’t matter how he makes me come, he does it until I’m so tired I can’t keep my eyes open.
He’s also kept my phone hidden from me since then as well, so I don’t even know if there are more threats from Brent or a possible change of heart—which I doubt knowing how creepy the man is. Half of me hopes there’s a message from my father on my phone showing he’s worried about me, but I know there won’t be one like that from him.
I’m sure there’d be something like it from Johnnie if I practically vanished off the face of the earth for days like I have. My daddy would definitely worry about me and that’s why I love him so much. It’s also why I haven’t argued, pushed for him to tell me what’s going on when he starts to kiss me. I know he’s just trying to protect me, and I adore that. Honestly, I’m more worried about who’s protecting him.
Obviously, he’s staying here with me to more than just keep me here. He had to have talked to someone to have him stuck by my side, because he could have simply locked down the elevator again when he went to work. I promised I wouldn’t try to leave and after everything, I know he believes me when I said that.
