Four-leaf looked relieved Silver hadn’t had him dragged to the church basement. I would be too.
Delta turned, eyes roving over me to make sure I was safe with his own eyes. He looked at Puff too, eyes hardening. “Done.”
Stalking across the room, he hauled Four-leaf off the floor with no resistance and shoved him in the direction of the office with an arm held behind his back.
Silver turned to me as soon as they disappeared. His eyes shone, painting me and Cream Puff with pale light. No words, only reaching for me and lifting me into his arms with far more gentleness than it appeared.
I didn’t fight it. If anything, my body relaxed against its will, a feeling of utter safety wrapping around me and Puff. He didn’t speak until we were inside my apartment and he was laying me down on the couch in my living room.
Puff didn’t even try to get down and explore and play. She crawled into the crook of my arm and hid her face. Seeing that hurt more than anything happening to me.
“Baby girl,” Silver said. “Talk to me.”
“I’m okay,” I said. “I don’t even think it was long enough to do any damage.”
Ifeltthe anger rolling off him.
“Don’t kill him.”
“If he had anything to do with this, I will kill him,” Silver said. “As much as I want to separate his limbs from his torso right now, Four-leaf has never been anything but loyal. If he’s innocent, I won’t.”
“We’ll find out,” Comet said. “With the traps the Legion’s been setting, he could have ridden straight through an enchantment.”
“He wouldn’t have known?”
Comet grimaced. “If it’s the kind of trap I’m thinking? No. Because it’s already been cast. Like a net. Or… a bucket of paint someone spilled and you walk through it and the paint gets all over you.”
If they were doing that…
Silver growled. “We’ll have to start screening people on the patrols.” He scrubbed a hand over his face. “Baby—”
“Go,” I said. “I’m okay.”
“I’m sending Rocketman to make sure you’re okay.” A command, and one I wasn’t going to disobey. He glanced around the room. “And then I’ll get the rest of the girls over here. You need to get moved in.”
I smirked. “That’s what you’re worrying about?”
“I’m worried about everything when it comes to you. But yes. I want you to be comfortable.” He leaned close and kissed my forehead. “I wantyouto believe you’re staying.”
The way he looked at me, I saw the division in his instincts. Wanting to be with me, but also needing to find out what the hell was happening. “I’m not going anywhere,” I said. “Believe me, I don’t feel like leaving the apartment again.”
Silver sighed, but stood. “I’ll be back later.”
“Promise?”
He winked. “Promise.”
Comet kissed me quickly and followed, leaving me in silence. I gently lifted Cream Puff away from my arm, curled around her on the couch, and let my fear and guilt wash over me.
They could tell me this wasn’t my fault all they wanted. I didn’t know if I’d ever believe it.
