“The members would be happy to have an assault, no matter the level of spell work they throw at us,” Delta said.
“I’m sure they would,” Silver snapped. “Do you think there’s enough of us to waste on an assault like that? We’d win, but we’d be weak. And then they could come back and have a chance at actually hurting us and the compound. Or worse, one of the other Courts finally decides to take their shot.”
“Something change?” I asked. Last I checked, we were on good terms with all the other Courts.
“Nothing has to change. The less fae there are, the more concentrated the power.”
Wraith leaned against the wall. “It’s a real clusterfuck, isn’t it?”
“Yes.” Silver’s voice was dark. “And there’s no fucking way out of it.”
“Do you think they’ll attack the morning of her birthday?”
He shook his head before looking at Wraith. “As your King, I’m demanding raw truth.” Power surged through the room, unsettling all of us. Silver rarely leveraged his power against us. He didn’t have to. But when he did, we knew it was of the utmost importance and seriousness.
“Got it.” Wraith’s voice scraped under the pressure.
“How close can you get to them without injuring yourself, killing yourself, or letting them know you’re there?”
Wraith stared at our king, eyes blazing with darkness. “I’d have to see the spells first. If there’s a place for me to step through the shadows, I can get in and out. But I need to go look first. If they’re weaving vertical spells as well, I’m not sure.”
Another blast of power curled around us. “Go and see. If you think you will attract attention, you are to come back. If their magic will harm you, come back immediately.”
The magic wove itself around Wraith. He wouldn’t be able to disobey the command, and the rage on his face showed exactly how he felt about it. “Was that necessary?”
“Yes.”
“You don’t trust me now?”
Silver stood to his full height. Wraith was taller, but he didn’t seem it right now. “I trust you with everything, Wraith. Which is why I know you’d try to get what we needed, no matter the cost. It’s not just the five of us or the club you have to think about now. It’s Skyla. You have anâmmelune. Be pissed at me, but I won’t apologize for making sure you come back to her.”
I watched Wraith’s hands curl into fists. He didn’t like being bound—none of us did—but he also didn’t argue. Everything Silver said was true. And if there was a spell he didn’t see coming, Silver’s command would protect him.
“I’ll be back,” he said, stalking out of the room.
Delta chuckled when the door closed behind him. “He’ll be pissed at you for a while.”
“Let him be pissed. I’d rather have him be pissed and alive. Everything’s fucked. You think I’m going to give the Legion a chance to kill one of Skyla’s mates? She’s struggling enough without that possibility.”
The air in the room went taut. When he put it that way? I’d happily volunteer to be bound by his power.
Speaking of ourâmmelune, I needed to go see her and speak to her. If she was willing, tonight we would play. If not, I’d take her to my bed and worship her. But our little mate was kinky as fuck, so I hoped she would be willing.
Now that I wasn’t on a bike? My dick wasn’t cooperating. “We good here?” I asked, holding up the paper bag.
Comet laughed quietly. “Don’t go too hard on her. Last night was more intense than we anticipated.”
“Even if he’s hard on her, it’s not like she’ll know,” Delta said.
“True.”
Silver locked eyes with me. He was still troubled, but he nodded. “We’re good here.”
“If you need me, you’ll know where I’ll be.”
Abandoning the club house, I let my power unfold, searching for my mate. She was still in Maggie’s apartment. Instead of retrieving her right away, I crossed the plaza to my own apartment. There was one more step I needed to take.
The heavy sedative Carson gave me needed to be altered slightly. I poured enough of it into a small bottle before focusing my power. Strengthen the medication to keep Skyla asleep longer, but infuse it with magic so I would know when she took it and was unconscious. But also to tell me if her body was in any distress.
