“I’m sorry for not answering your call, and I’m sorry for throwing the phone at you. It won’t happen again.”
Cade breaks his hard gaze from me and looks to Christopher as he takes a seat at the other end of the couch. Ruthie leaves his lap to sit on Christopher’s, and she wraps her arms around his neck then kisses his cheek. “Don’t be sad, Twistiphwor, it’s her woss.”
“Thanks, Ruthie.”
Cade continues to watch him, clearly not ready to forget the whole thing. “If you don’t answer your phone again, when we call, you won’t get a phone at all.”
Christopher tenses at the authority in his voice but he holds back any attitude and nods.
Cade still doesn’t let up, “And next time, if you are not going to be somewhere you are supposed…”
“Hey, Walker,” I interrupt as I start over to sit with them, “it’s all good. He said he was sorry and it won’t happen again. Now what kind of pizza did you get?” I smile and give him a wink as I go to walk past him, but he grabs my hips and pulls me down on his lap.
Before he can respond, Christopher leans over and says, “Thank god there is a meat one here.”
Cade grunts. “Of course there is.”
“Well me and Faif wuv our veggie one, and we awe healfier fwor it,” Ruthie says with a smile.
“That’s right,” I agree, as I lean over and grab a slice of pizza then swallow a gasp when I feel Cade’s very big, very hard erection. I push back against it as I lean back, and his grip on my hips strengthens, telling me just how far I’m pushing him.
“Whatever,” Christopher mumbles while Cade releases another grunt.
“Don’t listen to them, Ruthie. They are just jealous because they do not have the willpower that we do.”
“I don’t think so, Red. We don’t do it because we like meat and we want to eat it.”
I turn to face him. “Prove it. If that’s the case then let’s see if you and Christopher can go one week without eating meat after today.”
He looks at me like I’m ridiculous. “Please, a week? I’ve been gone on missions for months at a time, Red. A week is nothing.”
“Yes, but you weren’t ever around it so it never tempted you.”
Christopher shrugs, “All right, I’ll do it too. I can handle a week.”
I smile, “I guess we will see.”
If I were to bet money on it, I’d say three days tops…
CHAPTER 27
Cade
Later that night, I’m walking upstairs to take a shower when I hear Red and Ruthie talking as they get her into bed. “Faif, can I ask you somefing?”
“Of course, you can ask me anything.”
“Why doesn’t Tade bewieve in God?”
I stop cold just outside her bedroom door. There’s a long moment of silence and I brace myself for what Faith is going to tell her, not wanting anything about my past to be shared.
“Well…” I hear her start, “I don’t really know all the details why. It’s something Cade doesn’t like to talk about, but it’s important we respect everyone’s beliefs even if it’s not something we agree with.”
“But what about heaven?”
“What do you mean?”
“When we die we go to heaven, but if Tade doesn’t bewieve in God what happens to him? Does he still get to go to heaven?”
I grind my teeth against the pain in my chest at hearing her voice waver in fear, her question reminding me of someone else’s so long ago.
“Yes, he will go to heaven.”
“But how?”
“Because even though Cade doesn’t believe in God, God believes in him.” Her nonsense has a storm of turbulent emotions building inside of me. I don’t know whether I want to rage at her or kiss the shit out of her for it. “Sometimes, Ruthie, things happen in our lives that hurt us so much it can mess with our judgment. I believe you have to do something very horrible to not go to heaven. You have to be a bad person, and we both know Cade is not a bad person. He is one of the very best.”
“Well dat’s good to know. I was vewy worwied about dat. My heawt hwurt to even tink of him not getting to be wif God.”
Another wave of pain slices through me to know she was worried about this, that she was worried about me. This is the exact fucking reason why I don’t want her being brought into this shit…
“Oh, Ruthie, you can talk to me anytime you feel afraid about something, but God is not someone you should ever fear. He loves us more than we are capable of even understanding. Like I said, you have to be a very awful person to not go to heaven. So no more worrying about that, okay?”
“Otay, I won’t.”
“Good. Goodnight, sweet girl, sleep well.”
“Night, Faif.”
I back up as I hear her walk toward the door then as soon as she closes it I’m on her. She lets out a startled gasp that I inhale when I take her hot, wet mouth in a desperate kiss. Lust rushes through my veins at the sweet taste of her exploding on my tongue. Slipping my hands under her short, classy fucking dress, I cup her perfect lace-covered ass before hoisting her up. Her slender legs wrap around my waist as I stumble to the bedroom. I kick the door closed then pin her up against it and she lets out a fiery whimper when I slam my aching cock against the sweet spot between her legs.
I tear my mouth away and stare into her dark emerald eyes that are lit with a need that matches my own. “Mmmm, eavesdropping, Walker?” she asks, giving me a sassy smile that makes me want to pound inside of her until it disappears. I decide that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Instead of responding, I carry her into the bathroom. “What are you doing?”
“I was on my way up to have a shower, and now you are too.” I put her down in front of me and turn on the water, making it hot enough that steam immediately begins to cloud the room.
