“Sorry?”

Poor server. He has to go through this.

“The plate of fries, if you could keep the fries on one side of the plate, preferably wrapped in wax paper, and the ketchup if you could create a nice puddle of ketchup,”

“A puddle…”

“Yes, heart-shaped would be nice…but not too big just on the other side of the fries, so they balance each other out.”

Yup, those fries are going onto social media.

“I will do my best!” he says eagerly. God knows he is earning his tip.

“Edith, why must you torture every server?” I say, getting comfortable in my chair for a girl’s bitchy night out. “Why can’t you, for once, order something without a star or a heart or …”

“… Prince.” She says unrepentant. “Next time I’ll ask them to draw me a prince.”

Sylvia and I look at each other shaking our heads, but our Edith is adamant.

“Listen, bitches…” Edith sits up and starts her speech, as if she is the teacher at some weird school where we are the only two students.

And here it comes.

“Throw it out there. Whatever you want. Remember, the universe is always listening.”

The waves of the Hawaiian ocean seem to support her. We are, of course, never going to agree with her social media driven optimism.

“And by universe,” says Sylvia, using air quotes with her hands, looking cute and silly at the same time, “you mean social media”.

“Yup, I agree. That is her universe.”

“Bitches!” shouts Edith, sending me and Sylvia into a fit.

“Listen to the sound of the ocean. Watch the night sky. This 5-star hotel with a rooftop infinity swimming pool! Sure, that area is private…”

“Yeah, I am still sore about that!” complains Sylvia.

I am more grateful than Sylvia. “There are 3 other pools and we enjoyed all of them!”

“The point is, we are here in Hawaii in all this luxury, surrounded by fabulous handbags. We could never afford this! But here we are! It’s the universe answering us!”

“Or you could say that we maxed out our credit cards for a week of guilt free fun.” Sylvia uses her robotic voice to deflate the thoughts of Edith. The logical Sylvia vs the flighty Edith!

I enjoy their battles. Until they turn to me.

“And you Brooke!” says Edith, getting louder.

“Oh, oh…” giggles Sylvia, knowing Edith has turned her attention to me.

“You need to open up. I saw how you froze next to that gorgeous security man. He was completely into you.”

“No, he wasn’t,” I say, as my ears turn hot.

Really? I never thought of this.

“I have to agree with Edith on this one, Brooke. He was barely looking at us. You had his full attention.”

“But I barely said anything,” I hear regret entering my voice.
