In the middle of another contraction, she is being settled in her suite. She is bent over the bed as I massage her back, trying to help her through her contractions. She screams at every nurse who walks in the room, demanding to be left alone. Finally, it’s over, and she turns to sit on the bed.
“They are getting stronger.” She leans her head on my chest.
“Pretty soon, you will be holding our little man.” I kiss the top of her head.
“Wait, where are we?” She looks around.
“St. Mary’s Hospital.”
“This is not where my doctor is.” There is a slight panic in her voice.
“She will be here. Oliver called her. This hospital has the best maternity unit in the state.”
“You didn’t have to,” she says as she looks at me.
“I want nothing but the best for you and my son.”
“How?”
“I planned it weeks ago, hoping you would come home and let me be with you when the time came.”
“Thank you.” She lays in bed.“I’m happy you are here. I can’t imagine going through this without you.”
“So am I.” I comb a few strands of hair from her face.“I love you, baby girl.” I softly kiss her lips.
Even though we have been here for hours, it felt like time passed quickly. Before I know it, she is being prepped to push. She has been so strong. I feel kind of useless since she is doing all the work. All I have been able to do is hold her hand, say comforting words and do the breathing exercises.
“Push, you are almost there. The head is crowning,” her doctor orders.“You are doing great. A few more, and you’ll meet your son.” Then I hear the most beautiful sound known to man.“Ready to cut the cord, Dad?” The doctor asks. I look at Ava, all smiles with tears.
“Yes.” I walk over and cut the cord. My son is perfect.
“Going to get him cleaned up.” The nurse takes him away while he cries a storm. I stand beside Ava impatiently waiting.
“Ready to meet your son?” The nurse asks, handing him over to Ava.
“He is perfect, Viktor,” Ava says as she holds our son.
“Yes, he is,” I tell her.
I stand next to her watching their bond. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. The woman I love holding our precious son.
Chapter Thirty Seven
Ava
“Isn’t he adorable?” Lisa says, smiling.
It’s been so long since I last saw Lisa. When I came back from the cabin she was back home spending time with her parents. I have missed her and am glad that she is finally home.
“He is. Aren’t you, baby boy?” I kiss the top of my son’s head.
“How are you feeling?” she asks.
“Exhausted but happy.”
“I can take him if you want, so you can rest,” she tells me. A nice gesture, but I can’t see myself handing him over.
