“You arrogant perv-”
I can see it coming just like I saw the punch. Her foot moves back while the other pivots so she can bring her knee up to my groin. In defending my dick from an unnecessary attack, I take a step to the side, causing her to stumble again.
Yelps of frustration spurt from her as she falls forward again into my arms, where I know she belongs.
Cory doesn’t stay there for long as she pushes me away in a meager attempt to stand up without me. She should know that I’m always going to be here to catch her when she falls. She needs to be taken care of; to be taken care of by someone like me. I knew it from the moment her father handed me her picture and itineraries.
I don’t know what comes over me every time I’m near her. Cory has this hold over me, but I can’t do anything about it.
“Why are you just standing there looking at me like that?” Puffs of air blowing through her supple, light pink lips tell me she’s cold. I need to get her inside.
“I’m waiting for you to get whatever fight you have left out of your system so I can take you home.”
She narrows her gorgeous blue eyes at me, jabbing a finger into my chest, her voice low and harsh as she says, “You’ve got some nerve thinking that I’m going to go anywhere with you, let alone to my house. You have thirty seconds to explain why you’ve been following me all night before I scream bloody fucking murder.”
“Miss Cory Girard, I’m Collin Conyers, your bodyguard.”
“You’re lying. I don’t have, need, or want a bodyguard. I can take care of myself,” she states with a stomp of her foot.
I grip her around the waist and pull her in so close our noses can touch. There’s an erection desperately trying to take over, but I need to get out of my head. “If you’re going to behave like a petulant toddler, I’ll take you over my knee and spank you like one for misbehaving. Did you leave anything inside?”
“I’m not answering that and let go of me,” she growls and jerks in my arms, trying to break free, but I won’t let her go.
“No. I need you to do what I say because you’re in danger and I’ve been hired to protect you. Stop giving me shit and let’s go, Miss Girard.”
“Absolutely the fuck not,” she shakes her head, and I give her room to back up. “You’re going to have to show me something because your words aren’t enough.”
I do something better and pull out my phone to show her the number I’m about to call. Her face sulks and she folds her arms across her supple breasts that I can’t stop imagining my mouth sampling and bringing her heights of pleasure-
Shit.
I need to be her protector right now. The animal inside of me, desperate to claim her and take her away from the reality of her situation, wants to pin her against the wall and make her mine.
“So, are you going to dial the number or are you just full of shit?” she asks.
I dial the number. When she hears the voice on the other end pick up, she snatches the phone from my hand to speak. “Bjorn. Did you really hire this Conyers guy to stalk me?”
She calls her father by his first name?
Still, I can’t help the feeling of triumph spreading on my face as she yells into the phone at her father, Senator Bjorn Girard. His stance on criminal justice has most citizens of West Cucina on edge. It’s gotten so bad that threats are being sent to both him and his daughter, who’s adamant about not needing a bodyguard.
“OH-EM-GEE… Corgi is that you?” A shrill voice interrupts us from the doorway of the nightclub.
A quick glance over my shoulder reveals a woman, clearly intoxicated and obnoxiously loud. The way she moves toward us and the look on Cory’s face tells me she’s not someone we should like.
Cory’s expression shifts as she reluctantly acknowledges the woman. “Wow, Lilibet, it’s so nice to see you out and about. How was rehab?”
Lilibet scowls before plastering a fake smile on her face. “It was a medical retreat for me to reset. I had the greatest time, you know, with Chad Abrams. You two dated, right?”
Cory replies, “I wouldn’t call one dinner conversation at the Governor’s Ball a date, but we run in the same circles from time to time.”
“That’s just great because we’re hosting a party in a few nights in honor of the primaries kicking off. We’d love for you to come and bring whoever you like,” Lilibet says as she eyes me from head to toe with lust filling her gaze.
Yuck.
She’s beautiful, but not for me. The only woman I want is growing angrier by the minute.
Cory sidles up to me and loops her arm under mine. “We’ll be there. This is Collin. It’s been such a whirlwind romance between us, it feels like we just met.”
