“Fucking finally,” he grumbles, and I laugh.
“I know, right.”
He cracks a smile and signs something on the paper in front of him before he leans back in his chair and looks at me. He has dark circles under his eyes, and he looks exhausted.
“You should take a nap.”
“No time.”
“Big case?”
“Yeah, the Miller case. We go to trial tomorrow.”
“Good luck.”
“Thanks, but I think you’re going to need it more,” he tells me. “What are you going to do about Goldie now that she’s made a move?”
“I don’t know, exactly. I want to ask her out,” I tell him.
“Oh, okay, so you’re going to do what you’ve been doing for the last two years then,” he says sarcastically.
“I’m going to be more direct,” I argue. “I won’t take no for an answer this time.”
“Yeah, women love that,” he deadpans.
“How would you know?” I ask him, and he glances at Clara and then back at me.
Wonder what that means.
“I need to get back to work. We have dinner tomorrow, right? I can’t wait to hear how things have progressed between you two then.”
“Maybe I’ll have to cancel because I’ll be out on my date.”
He laughs, and I glare at him before I turn and head out of the office.
“Thanks for lunch,” I tell Clara, and she smiles.
“Glad that you liked it.”
I wave before I head back to the elevator and down to my floor. Goldie still isn’t back at her desk, and I frown.
I wonder how she’s going to play this. If I know Goldie, and I like to think that I do, then she’s probably going to pretend like nothing ever happened. I won’t let her, obviously.
I take a seat in her desk chair and smile as I see all of her things on her desk. She has a picture of her with Lottie when they were kids and another of her holding Honor, Lottie’s baby. I grab that one and smile. She looks so happy, so beautiful, as she smiles down at the little baby.
That should be us. It will be us. I can’t wait to see her with our kids.
My phone rings, and I set the photo back and head into my office to answer it.
“Hello?”
“Adrien, it’s me. I have to take the rest of the day off,” Goldie says, and she sounds panicked.
“What’s going on?”
“Lottie fell and hit her head. I’m taking her to the hospital.”
“Do you need anything? I can come and—”
