“True love,” Goldie says wistfully, and I smile.

“Yeah.”

Patrick pulls up in front of her apartment building, and she smiles.

“Thanks for the ride… and for dinner.”

“Anytime.”

She smiles as she reaches for the door handle, and I wish I had a reason to ask her to stay.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” she says as she climbs out, and I pass her the purse and the pizza.

“In case you get hungry later. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

She smiles, waving as she closes the door and rushes into the building. Her brown hair turns dark and sticks to her head, soaked in an instant. She looks adorable.

Patrick buzzes down the partition, and I turn to look at him.

“Home, sir?”

“Yeah,” I sigh.

I just hope that this is one of the last nights I have to go home alone.

NINE

Goldie

The storm has passedwhen I wake up the next morning, and smile as I remember last night with Adrien. It had been so romantic and intimate in the back of the car with the rain pouring down around us. It was like we were in a cocoon like we were the only two people on Earth.

I stretch in bed, wondering what I should do today. Lottie is still taking it easy, and I know that she wanted to spend time with Honor and Anson today. I should run errands and go get groceries, but my car is still in the shop and probably will be until Monday at the earliest. I don’t feel like riding the bus around. I could clean up my apartment, but it looks like such a nice day that I don’t want to waste it inside.

I roll over, grab my journal off of the nightstand and open it to the last page.

Dear Diary,

I went outwith Adrien again last night. It wasn’t planned or anything. There was a storm, and he offered me a ride home. We grabbed pizza on the way. I think that I liked it even more than our first date.

The rain made it feel like we were the only two people on Earth. He was so charming and sweet too. I wish that things were different. I wish I didn’t work for him and could be with him. I think that he would be worth dropping my walls for.

I let out a deep breath.I know that I feel that way after last night, but I’m not ready to act on those feelings just yet.

I sigh as I climb out of bed and head into the kitchen. I pull open my fridge and wince when I see there’s nothing but a stick of butter and an apple that looks well past its expiration date.

“Man, I really need to go shopping today.”

A knock sounds at the front door, and I head over to answer it.

“Be honest, you’re stalking me,” I say when I pull the door open and see Adrien standing there with takeout bags dangling from his fingers.

“Do you always answer the door half-naked?” He asks me, his voice hard as he glares down at my bare legs.

“Yep.”

He glares at me as he pushes past me inside, and I roll my eyes as I close the door and follow him over to the kitchen counter.

“What are you doing here, Boss Man? Just in the neighborhood?”
