He lunges back, clutching his face, blood seeping through his fingers.
Then he roars, spit flying from his lips and every one of his vulgar muscles bulging through his leather like flesh.
Something collides with me. A twisted human half breed with great wings chitters like an insect as it comes back for its second attack.
It’s slammed by Reid, who tears it to pieces.
More attack. Half breeds, all twisted and malicious. Cyrus joins the fight, slaughtering like a master.
I resume my attack on Ivan, who has placed himself between me and the tower.
His powers are strong, and our roars and screeches are almost deafening as we clash.
I get a hard punch to my face, and as I blink him back into focus, he wraps himself around me, crushing my wings between my back and his chest. Then he flies upwards. Higher and higher until we pass the clouds and leave the rain behind.
‘I am God now. I am God. I AM GOD!’
‘You’re a mortal man!’ I hiss, biting down into his arm and ripping a chunk of meat away.
He yells and weakens his grip. I’m smoke again and swoop behind him, reforming to take hold of his wing.
‘And these belong to me!’ I pull.
It starts to tear and his screams are of anger and pain.
I pull and pull as we spiral down. I laugh wildly and swiftly grab the other one. Only when I hear a glorious rip do I stop. I hold them in my hands and I bellow in blood-soaked victory.
My mother's wings turn to gold dust, and I watch it soar with purpose towards the tower.
Ivan grabs me as he falls. I spread my wings and kept us in the air, looking down at him as he clings to my body.
His eyes glow as he heals himself. The wounds mend, but the wings are gone for good.
He pulls back his hand and buries his long taloned fingernails deep into my stomach.
‘You fucking whore bitch!’
He drags them down before I can shift my form, carving me up.
My wings struggle to keep us both in the air, and we begin to fall.
Reaching out for something to grab is pointless. I’m too injured to shift my form.
We fall back through the clouds. Back into the rain. Further and further, straight to the ground.
Where we land with a body-shattering thud, slap bang in the middle of the battle.
thirty-eight
Mybodyisbrokenand bleeding.
Blood fills my mouth.
Ivan groans. I look to see him lying beside me.
His bones click and snap as he fixes himself. The power he stole from Reid puts him back together again, and in little to no time at all, he’s standing over me.
Laughing.
