Me:You sure tomorrow works? Do you need to talk to Zeke first?

Zoey:Just did. He’s fine with it. Where are we eating?

Me:I thought we’d hitBurgers & Pop.

Zoey:You can’t be serious.

Me:What’s wrong with that?

Zoey:Sam. Please tell me you’re joking.

Me:I love burgers.

Zoey:Everyone loves burgers. Well, except maybe people who don’t eat meat, but that’s beside the point. That food truck just reopened after getting shut down for a roach infestation.

Me:Mm. Protein.

Zoey:*gags*

Me:I’m kidding! We’re meeting atJonathon’s.

Zoey:A bistro. Casual. Good food. I like it. What time?

Me:I told her one o’clock so you’d have a time cushion if things got crazy at the shop.

Zoey:That’s smart. Sure you thought of it, yourself?

Me:Hardy-har-har. Yuck it up, bestie.

Zoey:*laughing face emoji* See you tomorrow, Sam.

Me:See you tomorrow, Z.

Chapter7

It’s Indigestion. That’s All

Zoey

“My ass is going to be huge if I keep eating out like this.”

I punctuate the statement by popping a cheese-covered fry into my mouth and chewing it with a satisfied groan. Sophie chuckles before taking a bite of her greasy burger, and Ava nods in agreement.

“I can already see a difference. It’s juicier than it was last week.”

“Shut the fuck up,” I growl, then toss a non-cheesy fry at her head.

Her hand flies up and snags it mid-air before popping it into her mouth. Her lips spread into a giant grin as she chews, and I shake my head.

“Speaking of going out to eat, tell us about Sam’s date the other night. I heard it was a disaster,” Sophie says, and I know she probably got the bare-bones basics from Jared.

“She was a nutcase,” I say, shaking my head. “She was pissed that he only arrived three minutesearly, ordered a steak the size of my head, then said she was too full to eat it. Then she went on and on about Maine––where she went to take care of her dying grandmother––and lamented the old woman’s death because it meant she had to move back here.”

“Yikes,” Sophie says, her eyes widening.

“What a bitch,” Ava adds, shaking her head.

“Yep,” I agree, “especially when she accused Sam of not paying attention to her because he actually wanted to eat his meal. He told her it wasn’t going to work between them, and she caused a scene and stormed out.”
