I get to my feet and look out the window, but Keira’s not there anymore. I kick in the front door and find her in the hall, frozen to the spot.

“Are you stalking me?” she asks as she sees the fury in my eyes. “How did you find me?”

“You’re hardly difficult to tail. I found you easily, and so did Christian’s men. Come on, we’re leaving.”

“I’m not going anywhere yet. I need to get back to the animals.”

“You’ve exercised them. Your employees will be here soon enough. Enough excuses.”

She’s still holding something. Although I don’t think it’s likely, I’d be a fool to discount the idea that she might have a knife of her own.

“What’s that?” I ask, nodding at the hand behind her back. “Don’t fuck around, Keira. I’ve had enough.”

She takes a step back, her eyes wild. “Leave me alone,” she says.

I move quickly, reaching around her and clutching her wrist. She yelps and opens her hand, dropping something on the carpet, and I release her, stooping for a better look.

It’s a pregnancy test. And clear as day, there it is—it’s positive.

I look at Keira. She’s shaking and won’t meet my eyes. I get to my feet and reach for her hand.

“You’re never leaving my side again,” I say.

She doesn’t move. “You are not my jailer, Salvatore. You don’t get to tell me what to do.”

I lean close to her. “Youwilldo as you’re fucking told. Now get outside and get in the fucking car, or I’ll drag you out. Got it?”

I hear a noise behind me. “Wait there.” I run out front.

The son of a bitch isn’t dead. He’s crawling, broken bones grinding. His gun is in his hand, and he’s waving it my way, but he can’t even focus.

“Are you kidding me?” I ask. “You’re embarrassing yourself. You couldn’t shoot me in your condition if I gave you a million dollars and a hundred years to do it.”

He snarls at me. “I get her or he kills me.” He lifts the gun but it’s too heavy for him. He’s in too much pain. All he can do is wave it around.

I snatch the gun from his hand, toss it aside, and then take hold of his neck. As I break it, I hear what I know to be my car’s engine, and I groan.

I turn around to see Keira winding down the window.

While I was busying myself with the small matter of saving her life—again—she must have made her escape out back.

“You’re a monster,” she shouts, flipping me off. “Stay the hell away from me.”

I roll my eyes as she roars away, and drag myself back into the driver’s seat of my borrowed ride.

Running away inmycar, while carryingmybaby?

She’s in real trouble now.

Keira

Sheriff Dooley glances out through a gap in the blinds. “Yep, he’s still out there.”

I throw up my hands from my seat by his desk. “Can’t you arrest him or something?”

He sits back down, a wan smile on his face. “If he’s a member of the Valentino family like you say he is, I can’t touch him.”
