He turns the butt of his gun around, smacking me over the head with it. I see stars, but I refuse to stop grinning at him.

“You won’t see another sunrise,” I say. “You just watch. You’re a dead man, Christian.”

“A lot of confidence for a man tied to a chair next to two of his brothers. Just a shame you didn’t bring Antonio with you. Then I could have dealt with the entire Valentino famiglia at once.

“No matter. I can have the commission kill him. What shall I say he is? DEA? FBI?”

He grins. “Wait. I’ve got it. I’ll say he’s been trafficking kids. Yes, that’s a suitably fucked-up thing to accuse him of. Shame you three won’t be alive to see it, but you can’t have everything.”

He leans down toward me, grinning insanely. “Your wife can, though. She’s going to geteverythingI have to give.

“Plus, I think I’ll let all my men have a go on her. I bet she’ll fucking love it too. What do you think about that?”

Luca and Dante are watching from their chairs. Behind them are two armed men, guns ready. The men who let us in. The ones I said I would kill. I’m going to have to move fast if I’m going to keep my word.

“Six weeks,” I say, grinning up at Christian.

“What are you talking about? You’ve lost it already. Such a shame when I was looking forward to beating you for months. Keeping you like a little pet for whenever I get frustrated.”

“Six weeks you tortured me last time I was here.”

“I know that. Only you had to go and escape and spoil all my fun. Well, it won’t happen this time. If I get so much as ahintthat you’re trying to find a way out, I’ll start chopping limbs off your slut.”

“You know who helped me break free last time?”

He steps back, looking intrigued despite his attempts to remain angry. “Go on, then. Tell me.”

“I had help from inside.”

His eyebrows go up. “A fucking spy in my own ranks? A quisling little bastard. Who was it?”

“Him,” I say, pointing my head toward the guard behind Luca.

“Marcus?” Christian says, spinning around to face him. “You fucking asshole. I knew it.”

“No, chief,” he replies with a shake of his head. “He’s lying, I swear.”

The distraction is all I need. The entire time I’ve been sitting here, I’ve been working at the ropes binding my wrists.

The skin is rubbed raw, but I’ve been ready for a couple of minutes, waiting for the right time.

That’s the other thing Keira has taught me. Patience. No need to do everything immediately. You can wait for the right moment.

Like marrying her. If I get out of this, I’ll suggest we do it again, properly. Her saying yes because she wants to, not because I’m forcing her.

Or if she wants to walk away, I’ll let her. After what she’s been through, she deserves to make her own choice.

“Chief, look out!” the guard yells. I yank my hands free, reaching down to undo the bonds around my legs.

Christian spins back around to face me. As he does so, I lean forward and grab him, lowering my forehead and slamming it into the bridge of his nose.

He crumples to the floor, gargling as blood runs down his throat.

The guards fumble for their firearms. Luca and Dante rise in unison, still bound to their chairs.

They fling their heads back, breaking both guards’ noses with a crunch that echoes around the room.

The two guards stagger back, giving me enough time to grab the gun from the nearest one.
