It’ll leave my ass red and stinging with pain.

I can’t wait.

One year later…

“How’s she doing?” Salvatore asks, coming to sit on the blanket beside me.

I peek into the tent. Maggie’s asleep. Her enormous teddy bear is standing guard in the corner. “Still fast asleep.”

He puts an arm around my shoulder. “Her first beach holiday. What do you think?”

“I think I’d be taking advantage of the sun and stripping naked if it wasn’t for the company.”

He smiles, glancing over to where Phoebe is pottering about near the shoreline, one hand held by Zoey, the other gripped by Antonio.

He laughs as the waves splash over their feet.

Luca’s off running the empire, and Dante’s still bodyguarding Kathy’s daughter.

She’s traveling around the country taking landscape photos for her college course.

But Antonio is officially retired, so he’s here with Zoey and their little girl. A perfect summer vacation for us all.

“Don’t let them stop you,” Salvatore says. “Nothing wrong with getting an all-over tan.”

“There is when my best friend, your brother, and my goddaughter are about twenty feet away.”

“Nah,” he says with a smile. “That’s nearer thirty.”

I lay back on the blanket with him beside me. The sky is a perfect azure blue. It’s like summer is never going to end.

“Did you ever think we’d get here?” I ask.

“Traffic was pretty bad on the coast road.”

I give him a shove. “I meant us. Me and you. Did you ever think we’d end up happy? Likereallyhappy?”

“I knew it from the moment I took you to the lakehouse.”

“You did not.”

He drapes an arm over my side. “Sure I did. Two kids, picket fence, wedding rings. Had it all planned out from the start.”

“Two kids? Since when did you want two?”

“Did I not mention that?”

“No, you did not.”

He kisses the side of my neck. “Oh, I’m sure I did.”

His hand moves lower. “What are you doing?” I hiss.

“Just making sure my wife relaxes while the baby sleeps.”
