"You know what we have to do," Rafe mutters. "Hawk--get her out of here."
"What?!" I demand. "No!"
But Hawk lifts me off my feet and flings me over his shoulder--and then we're moving.
We run down the hallway, the sounds of boots pounding on the ground ringing in our ears. I can feel Hawk's muscles tense beneath me as he sprints towards the exit. I can see the determination in his eyes and I know that he won't stop until we're safe.
As we round a corner, I can see Rafe and Fallon holding off the guards with their weapons. I can see the sweat on their brows, the fear in their eyes, but also the fierce determination to keep us alive.
Then they're gone, Hawk taking me away from my mates even though I pound on his back with my small fists.
Hawk doesn't stop running, even as bullets start to whiz past us. I can hear the sound of glass shattering, footsteps echoing through the halls. My heart pounds in my chest as we near the exit, and I can see the sunlight streaming in through the open door. We're almost there.
"Where are they?" I demand. "Where are Rafe and Fallon? Tell me!"
"Sorry, little one, but there's no time for--"
Suddenly, I feel a sharp pain in my side, and I can feel blood oozing down my shirt. I cry out, and Hawk stumbles slightly, but he keeps moving, his grip on me tightening.
"We have to keep going," he grits out. "We have to get you out of here."
I can barely focus, the pain in my side overwhelming, but I can see the exit just ahead of us. I can see the bright sunlight streaming in, and the hope that we might make it out alive.
But when we burst through the doors, I see that we're not alone. The ACB guards are waiting for us, guns raised, and my heart sinks.
We're surrounded.
Hawk sets me down gently, his eyes flicking over my injury before he turns to face the guards. His body is tense, his jaw clenched, and I know he's willing to fight to protect me.
But before he can make a move, there's a sudden explosion of gunfire--and I see Rafe and Fallon bursting through a side door, guns blazing.
The guards are taken off guard, and we take advantage of that. Hawk hauls me up by my arm, my gunshot wound searing, but we stagger toward the car. Hawk tosses me into the car and I cry out in pain when he starts it up and veers away.
But I'm not in too much pain to realize what's wrong.
"Rafe and Fallon...they're still back there," I gasp. "We have to go back for them, please!"
"They made me promise I'd get you out," he says. "And they can take it--until we get them out, they'll survive anything. But you...you're too precious. We can't let you get taken into custody."
"Hawk, no," I say, but I'm not in any position to argue. I'm bleeding all over the back seat, my vision starting to blur.
Hawk's jaw is set as he drives, his eyes scanning the rearview mirror for any signs of pursuit. But as we speed away from the compound, a feeling of helplessness washes over me.
I can't believe I left Rafe and Fallon behind.
My mind races, trying to think of a plan to get them out, to make sure they're safe. But before I can even form a coherent thought, the pain in my side becomes too much and I lose consciousness.

Iwakeupindarkness.
My whole body hurts, my side searing where I got shot. Someone is doing something to the wound--switching out my bandages, I realize--and my eyes are bleary as I look over to find Hawk tending to me.
I try to sit up to get a better look at him, but my body screams in protest. Hawk turns his head towards me and his eyes lock onto mine. I can see the flicker of concern in his gaze as he leans closer to me, his hand gentle on my shoulder.
His eyes are blue.
