"Soyoutalkedtoher? How'd it go?"
Fallon hisses out a breath, shaking his head and biting his lip as we sit at the bar. I assume he's about to give me his whole spiel about her tits, her body, how he's going to have her eating out of the palm of his hand in a matter of days.
But he doesn't do any of those things; he actually...
...fuck, he actuallylikes her.
"I don't know, dude," he says. "There's something special about her."
What is it about this girl that has my best friends--two of the most cynical guys I know--losing their minds?
I can't help but roll my eyes, taking a sip of my drink. Special? Yeah, right.
"You say that about every girl you sleep with," I retort. "Then you get in her pants and the magic wears off."
Fallon glares at me, but he doesn't deny it. "No, man. Seriously. There's something different about Jade. I can't explain it."
I snort, feeling a little bad for my reaction. Maybe I'm just bitter because I haven't found anyone who makes me feel that way. "So what are you gonna do about it?"
He shrugs, looking almost sheepish. "I don't know. I just want to see where it goes, you know?"
I nod, feeling a twinge of envy. It's not like I haven't tried to find someone, or like I haven't wanted it. But I've never felt that connection--the magicclickthat's supposed to happen when an alpha meets his perfect omega.
And working with Rafe and Fallon makes it hard to even think about mating with someone for good. They're both more interested in the Enclave's mission.
Maybe I'm just not meant to have that kind of connection with someone.
I shake my head, pushing the thought aside. "Well, good luck with that. Just don't let it distract you from the job. We still need to get her on our side."
Fallon nods, his expression turning serious. "I won't. But I have a feeling that Jade is going to get onboard without being coerced, somehow. I don't know how yet, but I just...have this feeling."
I raise an eyebrow, intrigued. "What makes you say that?"
"I don't know," he says, running a hand through his hair. "It's just a gut feeling. Like she's going to be the missing puzzle piece that we've been looking for."
I can't help but feel a little skeptical, but I don't say anything. I've learned to trust Fallon's instincts over the years, even if they don't always make sense.
And that sounds like...
...it sounds like pack.
I don't want to hope, though.
Especially because there's a very big, very angryman standing in the way of all that.
"And what do you think Rafe would have to say about this new take on Jade?" I ask. "Because I have a feeling he's not gonna like it."
Fallon grimaces, taking a sip of his own drink. "Yeah, I know. But Rafe's always been a little...intense when it comes to the Enclave's mission. I think he forgets that we're still men withneeds. And like...Jade doesn't belong to Rafe. She's not his mate or anything."
"Better be quiet when you say shit like that or you might be overheard," I mutter. "And you don't want to end up in Rafe's tattoo chair."
"Again?" Fallon smirks. "I could handle it."
I snort at that. "Speak for yourself."
