I manage to slip away as Tony’s still letting off shots. When he has to stop and reload, I take the chance, sprinting up the driveway and onto the porch where I tackle him and pin him to the ground. Thankfully, red and blue lights accompanying the blaring sounds of police sirens turn up the street and stop in front of the house.

Cops jump out and I keep my knee in Tony’s back but put my hands in the air so they know I’m not a threat to them.

“Let him up, Hayden,” an officer commands, and I back off.

There’s a sense of calm in my gut. This chapter in our lives is finally over. Halo is safe and now we can work on forever.

* * *

The weeks flyby as we grow to love each other more and more every day. By the time she decides on what she wants to do with her life, I’m back at work chasing down criminals for hefty rewards.

Halo comes in twice a week to intern under Beatrice and is doing a great job learning the financial aspects of running a business. I know that I want her in my life forever and take the steps to make sure she knows that too.

I can’t believe someone so much smaller than me has the power to make me shake in my boots. I have a surprise for her, and she’s meeting me at an address that happens to be a car dealership.

When I see her tiny blue Corolla pull up, her brilliant smile through the windshield, it’s all I need to know this is the right decision. When she gets out, she runs into my arms, kissing me passionately in front of everyone.

“You gonna start something you don’t wanna finish out here, little girl.”

“Daddy, we can finish this wherever and whenever you want,” she tells me with a wink. I slap her ass and usher her inside the dealership.

Halo looks around and then at me, waiting for an explanation.

“Halo, I know you hate when I do lavish gifts, but this is necessary. So go on and pick out your favorite. Any car on this lot and it’s yours.”

Her eyes widen as she jumps up and down with joy, throwing her arms around my neck and grabbing me by the crotch. “Is Daddy gonna let me test-ride this dick in all of them?”

The salesman blushes and looks away, and I shake my head. “No, but whichever one you pick we can test it out.”

She picks out a nice-looking SUV, big enough to haul a family in, and I like it. After the papers are signed and we get the keys, I tell her to go out to her Corolla to make sure she didn’t leave anything inside.

“We’re just going to leave it here?” she asks as she bends that perfect little ass into the car.

“Yep, they’ll take care of it, baby girl. Check the glove box,” I tell her.

“I already did,” she says but still checks it again. This time, when she gets out and turns around, I’m on bended knee.

I can feel the box shaking in my hands. “Halo Alvin, I love you and I want you to be my wife. There’s not another day that needs to go by where you’re not wearing this ring and my last name. Will you marry me?”

“Hayden Haven, I love you so much and this is more than I could have ever imagined. Yes! I will marry you.”

EPILOGUE

HALO

One Year Later

Never in a million years did I think that the screams and cries of a newborn baby would be something I enjoy hearing. Yet, here I am, momma to little Harriet Haven.

Being the first wife of a Haven boy certainly is an experience, and being the one to bring the first baby into this family in over 20 years is absolutely insane. Every single one of his brothers and his sister fall over themselves to make sure I’m comfortable and taking it easy.

If I take it any easier, I’m liable to forget I have a household to run. Still, this family is better than anything I could have ever imagined. I can’t help but wonder if Nan is looking down at me, happy that I’m living this life.

“Halo,” Hayden calls, and the sound of our daughter crying is no longer bellowing through the walls of our home. Well, his home that we’ve turned into our little safe haven.

As it turns out, having your house shot up and police surrounding it doesn’t make it feel safe or give the neighbors a good impression of you. It feels good to let it go. Hayden and his brothers did an amazing job fixing the place up and selling it for me.

As for Tony, well, his arrest led to his bail being revoked and his criminal case wrapped up a few months ago. There’s a few decades tacked on to a slew of other sentences, especially with his priors. Tony’s Tatas and its infamous dark room were bulldozed and paved over.
