The committee cheered when I volunteered to offer financial support to our annual event. A woman named Donna said that she could spearhead the development of ideas for the event. When the meeting came to a close, a small round of applause for me spread around the table.
Rosa offered her hand to shake. “You did a great job. You’re a natural. You even got Bennett’s attention. That’s a difficult thing to do.”
“He did seem a little distracted. What do you know about him?”
Rosa gathered her papers together into a tidy pile. “Bennett Wiseman. I’ve heard he’s great working with his staff at the Red Cross, but he’s a grumbler when he’s asked to do something outside of his regular daily job. I was impressed by how you managed to pull him into the conversation. I’ve watched him sit through entire meetings staring out a window or scribbling unrelated notes.”
I blushed slightly, and I couldn’t wait to tell Nicolas about the meeting. I whispered to Rosa, “I’ve never done anything like this before. I hated committees in school.”
Rosa stuffed the last of her materials into a leather case and snapped it shut. “We all hated committees in school. You were a pro. I’m not even going to give you suggestions about how to do anything differently. You were on target.”
“Thank you.”
Rosa said, “I’ll get copies made of all of this material and send them to you. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help out. It’s what I do. I make everything run smoothly. I can’t wait for the next meeting, and I will see you then.”
Standing, I reached out and hugged Rosa. “Thank you for your help and support.” She hugged me back, and, for the first time, I saw her flustered. She straightened her skirt and nodded at me before quickly exiting the room.
I laughed when I realized I’d been a little too physically forward in my thank you. I couldn’t wait to see Nicolas. He was right about me participating in the community. It was already rewarding, and I had something to offer.
When I climbed into my car, my cell phone chimed. I pulled it out of my pocket and read Nicolas’ question. “Meeting went well?”
I typed back, “It was great. Thank you, Sir. Can I meet you at the studio?”
“Of course. Good boy. I knew you could do it. I’ll see you shortly.”
I pulled into the traffic with a broad smile on my face and sang along with the radio all the way to the studio.
