“Seriously?” I ask in disbelief.

“Yeah, I know them both. Kerian is the strong silent type. River is crazy, but I think he could be a good mate.”

“Is there a way to stop them?” I demand.

“No, once they lock onto you, it’s a done deal. I think you should give them a chance,” she urges.

“You know what happened. You know why they won’t want me when they find out.” I sit at the table, my head in my hand.

“I think you need to give them some credit. Get to know them. What happened wasn’t your fault. They’ll understand.” She tries to convince me.

“How do you know?”

“The universe doesn’t make mistakes,” she says mysteriously.

“Fuck, the universe again.” I roll my eyes. “What the fuck does that mean?” The universe never did shit for me.

“It means you should go on the date and enjoy the attention of two hot men,” she says.

“Is Ryker not in the house?” Vampire hearing is exceptional.

“No, he went to the club for a bit. I wouldn’t be afraid to say the same thing if he was beside me,” she says defensively.

“Right, he broke a man's hand for slapping your ass right after you met,” I remind her.

She ignores my comment. “Have fun on your date.”

“If this ends in disaster, I’m blaming you,” I threaten.

“It won’t. Let yourself relax for just a while.”

“I’ll try. Tell me about wolves now,” I say again.

“I think you should just ask them,” she says.

“You are a pain in the ass,” I snapped.

“I love you, too.” She makes kissing noises through the phone and hangs up on me.

I hit my head on the table. I guess I’m going on a date with two wolves. My head and my heart have conflicting emotions. My heart is being a sappy fool. My head is shouting,Danger! Danger! Turn back!

I’m not sure turning back is an option.

Chapter Six

Kerian

“I still don’t understand why we don’t take her out to the cabin, show her our wolves and fuck her until she agrees we are her mates,” River whines.

We are meeting Ava soon. River has objections about the location of the date. I spoke with Serenity, and she encouraged me to bring Ava to the club. She would be more comfortable around people she knew, and the club should be less crowded tonight. I need this to go smoothly, so I agreed.

Ava insisted on meeting us there through a long string of text messages. I was afraid to let her out of my sight but relented.

“Maybe because telling a human woman that we want to take her to the woods to our secluded cabin to shift in front of her will send her the wrong message. She might jump to the conclusion that we want her out there to hide her body,” I explain slowly. “She is not used to our ways—she’s not a wolf.”

We are getting ready at our house. When River moved back, he rented a shitty small apartment. I had built several small homes on a thousand acres of pack land. I lived in one in the middle of our packmates. When I became Alpha, I made plans to build something bigger. It made sense to include River in those plans. We were brothers in my mind, so moving him onto the land and into the house started making sense. Cars were my passion but building things out of wood was a close second. Working with my hands, taking something like a piece of wood, and sculpting it into something useful and beautiful, satisfied me. I could push away whatever was in my life that I couldn’t control and concentrate on controlling the finished piece. We finished the house together. It was a split level with three bedrooms and two baths. We used trees from our land and put our blood into it.

Unconsciously, I must have known we would share a mate.
