“I have never driven this long before,” Kayden said from beside me, rubbing his neck with his palm.
“You could ask Autumn if she could drive for the last few hours,” I suggested, but he only scoffed.
“Have you ever seen her drive? She drives like she’s fifty.”
“I know that’s the reason I rather walk than drive with her. I just thought about you, it must be exhausting.”
Kayden nodded, “It is, but I know I’m the only person you trust to drive you around. It’s worth it.” A small smile appeared on his lips and made my heart beat faster.
“Thank you, Kayden.” I took his hand in mine and stroked the little scar on his thumb. He got it from Blake, he had been a feisty little thing as a kitten.
I missed that little devil, since he lived with Kayden and Kayden mostly stayed over at my house, I didn’t get to see my baby very often.
Kayden brought my hand up to his mouth and pressed a soft kiss on my knuckles. It seemed like he had waited ages to finally do these kinds of things because he did them so easily, while I always felt anxious in case it was too much, or he didn’t like it.
“Are we still best friends?” His head shot up, and he looked at me bewildered.
“Of course, we are still best friends, why would you think anything else?”
Well, there are a lot of reasons why I was thinking about this question, one of them was the painting we drew on each other yesterday with my lipstick.
“Uhm, maybe because we did things best friends don’t normally do to each other.” It suddenly felt very hard to speak to him when it was usually so easy. Not in a bad way, I was just a little more nervous around him.
“It doesn’t change anything; you’ve always been and will always be my best friend, Tillie.” Kayden smiled softly, but I was still figuring out if he meant that this was simply a friends with benefits thing or that if we were a couple… but then why did he tell me yesterday that I was his first love.
First love.
I was just an anxious fool in love.
“We will be whatever we want to be, but we will always be best friends,” he continued and leaned over to me.
Kayden’s placed his hand at the back of my neck, and he gently pulled me towards him until my face was just inches from his.
“Do you understand?”
I nodded.
“Good, I just wanted to let the overthinking mind of yours know that we are still the same.” With that, he sat back and grabbed the cold coffee we had bought the last time we had taken a break.
“You knew I would overthink everything?”
“You overthink everything, even if wearing mittens in winter is a good idea because if you slip and fall, you can’t catch yourself as well as with normal gloves. So, it wasn’t just a wild guess that you’d overthink us too,” he explained.
“Mittens look cuter, but gloves are more useful. It’s a hard decision- would you stop laughing please?!”
“I’m not laughing!” he said, clearly stifling a laugh.
“You’re laughing about my mittens?”
“No, I would never dare to laugh at them.”
“My grandma made them for me, she used wool with glitter in it, they are adorable,” I defended my mittens, now laughing myself at this stupid conversation.
“I love your mittens, okay? In fact, I’ll buy you a dozen mittens if we find a store in Chicago that sells mittens in September.”
“You got no money to buy me mit-”
“Please, if you say the M word one more time, I’ll lose it. Besides, Nash sent me a bit for tomorrow.”
