Only, she wasn’t on the rock anymore.

A depth of fear he’d never felt in his life seized his limbs. Then he was running. Racing down the bank, leaping over rocks and tree roots. When he finally spotted her, she was being swept away by the current.

He ran faster, pushing himself to beat the current and only slowing when he was in line with her.

He dove into the river. Cold blasted his body but he barely felt it, instead putting all his focus on swimming toward her.

The second he was within reaching distance, he wrapped an arm around her waist. She coughed uncontrollably, her lungs crackling with water.

“Breathe, Hannah!” he shouted, rolling her to her back so her head was on his shoulder. “I’m getting us out of here.”

The current was strong. He swam as hard as he could toward the bank, and the moment he could stand, he did so with Hannah in his arms.

As soon as they were on land, he lay her down and rolled her to her side, hating how damn cold she was and the coughs that still racked her body. “Breathe, Angel.”

She choked and spluttered. It took a few minutes, but her chest finally stilled. “Erik.” She reached for him, and he tugged her tightly against his chest.

“I’m here, Angel. You’re safe.”

CHAPTER32

Erik watched the slight tightening of Hannah’s eyelids. He’d been up for hours, unable to sleep even though the night had been a late one. For the second time in as many months, police had come to her house, and so had paramedics. Hannah hadn’t wanted to go to the hospital, but because of her diabetes and what stress could do to blood sugar, they’d pushed her to go anyway.

Fortunately, she hadn’t had to stay the entire night and was resting in his bed now. Where she belonged.

His muscles tightened at the fact Marco had gotten his hands on her yet again. If it hadn’t been for her quick thinking with the insulin pen, the way she’d attacked and run…

Fuck, he couldn’t think about that.

A part of him wished she’d yelled for him when Marco had first grabbed her. But at the same time, he knew why she hadn’t. That could have cost Erik his life.

Just like Marco, that shooter on her land was found dead.

A small hum sounded from her throat, then she rolled to her side. There was a quick batting of eyelids before she opened them fully.

She frowned at him. “How long have you been sitting there?”

“Not long enough.” Wasn’t a lie. He could watch this woman all day. Hell, after last night, it would take a damn army to get his eyes off her.

She slid a hand beneath her cheek.

He ran a finger down her shoulder and arm, loving the tremble through her limb at his touch. “How are you feeling?”

“Like yesterday wasn’t real. Like it was a nightmare I’ve just woken up from.”

“Itwasa nightmare. But it’s over now.”

“But Angelo’s still—”

“Chandler made sure he got the recording, and the police know what he did. We still need to keep an eye out for Angelo though. Men like him don’t leave proof when they hire people like Marco to do their dirty work, so I doubt he’ll do time. But he may be pissed we told the police about him.”

If Erik ever saw the asshole around Hannah again, the guy was as good as dead.

She swallowed, gaze shifting between his eyes. “I’m sorry about Marco.”

“I’m not.”

Her brows flickered. “He was your friend.”
