“No. He was a work colleague. A man I knew was dangerous. A man I knew could easily tip to the other side.” He should have known better than to ever be even remotely friendly with the guy.

“Still, I’m sorry. And I’m sorry that it’s happened so close to Christmas.”

“The only thing I need to do for Christmas is be with you.”

Her smile softened. She took his hand and pressed a kiss to his palm. He felt those lips everywhere, even deep inside the little crevasses of his heart he didn’t know were waiting to be filled.

He grazed the pad of his thumb over her bottom lip. “Thank you for fighting last night. If he’d gotten you in his car…”

He could have lost her. And then he would have had to tear down the world to find her.

“It was just lucky I was able to convince him to let me grab my pen.”

“Not lucky. Smart.”

A small smile stretched her lips. “So, my diabetes kind of saved the day.”

“Yousaved the day, Angel.” Because she was all strength.

Her eyes softened, and she opened her mouth to say something, but his watch beeped and when he looked down, he frowned.

“What is it?” she asked, pushing up onto her elbow.

“Someone just pulled into my driveway.”

“Who?”

He lifted his phone from the bedside table and clicked into his cameras. The muscles in his forearms knotted when he saw a Bugatti stop by his front door.

Angelo climbed out, two other suited men coming around to his side.

Erik stood, air hissing from his teeth.

“Erik—”

“Stay here, Hannah. I’ll be back in a second.”

He moved out of the room, closing the bedroom door before heading down the stairs. The fury in his chest threatened to overflow into violence. Fury that the asshole would dare show his face here after what he’d done.

He moved into his office and opened his safe, then pulled out a pistol.

When he opened his front door, he aimed his gun at Angelo’s chest. “What do you want?”

The men behind him reached for the guns in their holsters. Erik wasn’t scared—he could shoot all three men in under a second.

But Angelo held a hand up and they stopped. “I am just here to talk.”

“Yeah? And did you just send Marco Salvatore to Hannah’s home last night to fucking talk?”

“That is what I would like to explain. Is Hannah here?”

“You think I’m gonna let you anywhere near her?”

“How else will I apologize?”

Erik could have laughed. “You want to apologize for sending a fucking hit man after her?”

“May we come in?”
