“You really can’t swim?”
She turned her head. “I really can’t swim. And being that close to the edge just now scared the shit out of me. Shows how much I like you.”
CHAPTER13
“Did you get a sale?”
Hannah groaned as she swung an arm over her eyes. It was only five o’clock on a Friday night, but she was already lying in bed, sloth pajamas donned and face scrubbed clean.
“No,” she groaned to Brigid. The woman was on speaker, so she couldn’t see her end-of-the-world dramatics but could probably hear them. “Either I have become the shittiest real estate agent around, or I’m cursed.”
She had to be, right? Barely anyone was contracting her to sell their homes, and the few shedidhave listed, she couldn’t move.
“I’m sorry, Han. I wish there was something I could do to help.”
She nibbled her bottom lip. “Do you know if Reuben’s said anything to James?”
Her boss had to be close to letting her go, right? James and Taylor weren’t doing much better, but they’d each closed two sales in the last few weeks.
“No, why? You think he’ll let you go?”
“Remember Nancy? She didn’t sell anything for three consecutive months, and he booted her out like she was chopped liver.”
“First of all, Nancy was a bitch who liked to steal other women’s boyfriends.”
Hannah cringed. The womanhadcome onto James. Pretty aggressively, in fact.
“Second, you’ve got an awesome track record. You’ve been Reuben’s top seller since you took the job. I would know—I’ve heard James complain about it enough.”
Hannah traced a wrinkle on her bed sheet. It was true. Before this long dry patch, she’d done really well. It was why she’d felt confident funneling all her savings into her home renovation.
Still, she wished she had her friend’s faith. But then, Brigid wasn’t the one who faced living in a house with no power if she couldn’t pay her bills.
“All right, I should let you get ready for your date, Brig. Thanks for listening, and have fun at your sushi night.”
Sushi was her and James’s go-to date-night dinner. The woman made it sound so good that Hannah occasionally got jealous and forced Henry to come over for their own sushi night…just without all the kissing and sex. Though Henry was a great cuddler.
Erik flickered into her mind. She could have a sushi night with him…only she hadn’t talked to or seen the guy in five days, since they’d spoken in the woods.
“Thanks, hon. Chat tomorrow.”
The second Hannah hung up, she moved to the window and glanced outside, looking over her beautiful property. Land that hadn’t cost her nearly as much as it could have. Land she needed to be able to pay the mortgage on.
With a sigh, she was about to turn around when a flicker of movement caught her attention. A long shadow at the back of the house.
Her brows tugged together. What was that? An animal? No. It was too big.
It looked like a person.
Her heart rate kicked up a notch, and she lifted her phone to text Erik.
Hannah: Hey. Are you home?
The three dots appeared instantly.
Erik: No. Why?
Something sounded near her back door. It was so quiet, most people wouldn’t have heard it. She only did because she was paying attention. It was one of the boards on the porch just beyond the door…someone had stepped on it and caused a slight squeak.
