“Please,” she begged. “I just need to know why you’ve decided to go elsewhere.”
Whyso manypeople were deciding to go elsewhere.
He cleared his throat. “Honestly, another agent spoke to us about some issues others have had with you.”
Another agent? “Who?”
“I don’t want to say. But they told us there have been some issues with your property sales and work ethic.”
Her jaw dropped. “What? That’s not true.”
Particularly not about her work ethic. Heck, she lived and breathed her job.
“I’m sorry, we’re just not comfortable maintaining the relationship at this point.”
The line went dead, and she just sat there, looking at her phone like it had sprouted heads.
Another agent was bad-mouthing her? Was it Ezra? Another agent in his office? Hell, it could even have been Taylor, or…
No. James wouldn’t do that.
But then, did she really knowwhathe would do? The man was possibly taking drugs and owed money to his dealers, something she never suspected would be possible a few days ago.
God, she was ready for this day to be over. Or better yet, she wanted a complete redo so she could make sure this day never actually happened.
CHAPTER22
Hannah rose from her desk and stretched, the crumbs from a cherry strudel scattered across the desk. Stress eating. She’d done a lot of that over the last week.
But it was Friday…finally. And as far as she was concerned, this week could go die in a hole. Brigid was still barely talking to her. James hadn’t shown his face in days, claiming he was sick. And Erik had gone away for the job she wasn’t allowed to know the details of, and even though he’d said it was a three-day thing, he hadn’t yet returned home.
Yeah, it had been a week to forget.
She blew out a breath and moved over to her key safe. There were three open houses this weekend. She entered the code, opened the door…and paused. Was that…
It was the key to Angelo’s home.
What the hell? That had not been there last Saturday. And she’d never found it in her home or car. Had someone taken it and put it back?
“Hannah.”
She jumped and turned to see Reuben standing in the doorway. “Hi. Yes?”
“I’m just leaving for that client meeting. Do you want to drive together or meet us there?”
“I’ll meet you there.” That would make a quick getaway easier. “Just about to leave now.”
“Great.”
“Reuben…”
He stopped.
“You haven’t opened this safe over the last week, have you?” Reuben had the code to all the safes here. Taylor also had the code, because Hannah had asked her to grab a key for an open once when she’d been running late. But surely Taylor wouldn’t take any of her keys…
“No.” He straightened “Why? Is one gone?”
“No.” The word came out too quickly, like word vomit. She didn’t want to give her boss any reason to question her competence.
