“Oh,” she breathes. “Okay.”
Her stomach growls, and her face flushes. “I’m hungry. I haven’t eaten today.”
My happiness evaporates. “Excuse me?”
She sighs. “I threw up this morning, then I got a call from Andrew, everything was crazy. I walked home, and I was just so exhausted, I didn’t have the energy to change, I fell asleep,” she whispered.
Christ. My brother really is a fucking asshole.
“Then we’ll eat, come,” I say as I take her hand. We’ll order in, but she needs to eat something now.
I make her a slice of toast and a hot cup of tea and watch as she eats it.
“How are you feeling?” I ask, hoping she’s not nauseous.
“I’m okay, I’m late, that’s why I took a test. I threw up when I saw the results,” she tells me sheepishly. “I’ve got to call the doctor and arrange an appointment,” she sighs. “Do you think I’ll be allowed to go to the funeral?”
Fuck me.
“Baby girl,” I say as gently as I can. “You’re going no matter what.” Let Andrew try and stop us, and I’ll fucking kill him.
TWELVE
ABEL
Two months later
“Are you ready?” Alexis asks, jumping up and down on the spot, her breasts bouncing as she does.
“Keep that up, baby girl, and the only place we’ll be going is back to bed.”
She rolls her eyes at me. “Behave,” she hisses.
Today is the day we find out the gender. She’s five months pregnant, and we have a scan to see our little one. I’m beyond fucking excited.
“Baby. when you’re around me, I can’t keep my hands off you. Now that you’re pregnant, it’s even harder. Don’t tell me to behave.” Pregnancy agrees with her, she’s fucking sexy anyway, but the pregnancy glow has intensified her beauty
“Have you spoken to Andrew?” she asks me, the sadness in her voice guts me.
It’s been two months since Maggie’s funeral, that day was fucking hard. Andrew kept glaring at Alexis, and all I wanted to do was punch the asshole. But I didn’t, I’d promised Alexis and my mom that I’d behave and not say or do anything to him. Which I managed to do, although it took a fucking lot of restraint. But as soon as the funeral was over, I took Alexis and got the fuck out of there. If I stuck around any longer, there was no way I was going to be able to not say or do something.
Since then, the fucker keeps calling, whenever I do answer, he wants to speak to Alexis, something that will never happen. Until he learns how to conduct himself without spewing hateful shit at her, he’s not speaking to her. End of it. Thankfully, Alexis agrees to it as well. Her safety and well-being is not something I’m going to fuck around with. Someone hurts her or makes her uncomfortable, she’s not going to be around them.
“No,” I sigh. “He’s holed up in his house and not willing to see anyone. The calls are always the same to me and my parents. He wants to speak with Alexis, and Mom thinks it’s because Maggie loved my woman, and he wants to be around someone whom Maggie loved. I don’t care what his reasons are, it’s not happening.
“I hate that he’s alone. He’s got to be hurting,” she says as she walks toward the front door. We need to get going otherwise we’re going to be late for our appointment.
“Baby girl, you’ve got to realize that sometimes there’s no fixing relationships. The way Andrew has treated you is fucked up and something you didn’t deserve. I know you think we can all be one happy family, but it’s not going to happen.” I will never forgive him for what he’s said and done to Alexis. Not now, not fucking ever.
“I know,” she says, sadness lacing her words.
I help her into the car. “Let’s go see our baby, yeah?”
As expected, the sadness vanishes from her eyes, and she gives me her bright beaming smile. “Yeah,” she breathes.

“I knew it,”she laughs as we walk toward the restaurant where we’re meeting my parents to tell them the good news. “I told you, didn’t I?”
