“You would find any excuse to talk to Clark, wouldn’t you?”

Natalie shrugs.

“Who wouldn’t? I think he’s pretty hot.”

“He’s much older than you.”

“So what? I’m just drooling over his presence. That’s all,” Natalie wags her finger in my face. “Now don’t you dare try and talk about something else. If it isn’t Anna and Eric bothering you, and I know it’s not work, then what is it? Is it Dad?”

“What?” I stare at her. “Why do you think it would be about him?”

Natalie’s eyes glint, and she looks triumphant. “I knew it! I knew it was about Dad!”

“What are you talking about? I didn’t say a word!”

“You didn’t need to. You just went bright red,” Natalie giggles. “You think you’re good at hiding things from people, and you are, for the most part. But not me. I know you too well.”

I know she does. Ever since I started at her father’s company, Natalie and I have been close friends. She is an astute person, really bright. That is why she was going to graduate magna cum laude; the brain of hers is much like her father’s.

Of course she was going to know me better than I would want.

I look at my hands as I talk. There’s no way that I can tell her the truth while I’m looking her in the eye.

“Fine. You’ve got me. The truth is… well…”

“Do you want me to fill in the blanks?” Natalie asks.

“How can you fill in the blanks?”

Natalie is giving me a knowing smirk when I glance up. She winks at me. “When Dad took you out of Anna’s engagement party, you went back to his place… and slept with him, didn’t you?”

I’m surprised that my jaw doesn’t hit the floor. “You… what?”

“I’m an adult, and I am not stupid,” she grins. “Dad told me that you were going to be staying so Anna and Eric couldn’t find you, and I put it together from that. If all you did was stay at his place and nothing else, it won’t be bothering you like this. Especially with Dad being out of sorts, and he does nothing but stare at you whenever you’re in the room. When he sees me watching him, he gets all flustered and tries to change the subject,” Natalie taps her head with a finger. “I know him. And I had a pretty good idea why he was behaving like this. Now I know for sure.”

I groan and pull my knees up to my chest. “God, I want to curl up and die,” I moan.

“Why? Because you slept with your boss?” she chuckles heartily at my expense.

“That. And I shouldn’t be talking to my boss’ daughter about it, either!”

Natalie laughs again, really enjoying herself. “Dad is single, and so are you. If you’re both consenting, who am I to object? Doesn’t matter what I think.”

I can’t believe my ears, but I’m grateful she’s so great about this. “Really?”

“Of course not! I’m surprised it took this long, though.”

I look at her in confusion. “What do you mean?”

“Anna might not have noticed, but I could see this happening a mile off,” she says. “You two have been tiptoeing around your attraction for such a long time. It was going to happen sooner or later, and I was beginning to think you were dragging your feet.”

I let the words sink in. She suspected something was going on… I don’t know if things could get more embarrassing.

“But I was with Eric a short while ago,” I point out.

“It’s fine to have a crush while you’re in a relationship as long as you don’t disrespect your partner. And you never acted on it when you were with Eric. Besides, Dad is a pretty handsome guy considering his age, so I don’t blame you for having a little crush on him.”

I cover my face with my hands. “Sometimes, I really hate you.”
