I look around, and I can’t quite believe what I’m seeing. Caitlin is coming toward us, looking from me to Megan and back again.

What is she doing here?

Chapter 12

Megan

MyheartsinkswhenI see Caitlin approaching. I’ve had a few encounters with her before, and they didn’t leave me with a good impression. Now she’s coming over, looking as if she’s caught us doing something.

I step away from Joel, and he lets me go, turning to face his ex.

“Caitlin, what are you doing here? You don’t have any business around here, do you?”

“Actually, I was on my way to my car after meeting some friends for dinner,” she explains. “We were going to head back to my place to open a few bottles.”

“Why am I not surprised?”

Caitlin seems to ignore this, turning her steely gaze onto me. “It was just a coincidence that I saw you coming in here, and curiosity got the better of me. Imagine my surprise when I catch you being intimate with your PA.”

“It wasn’t intimate,” I point out, but Caitlin simply sniffs.

“I had a feeling something was going on between you two, but to have it confirmed like this.”

“Caitlin, just go away,” he says with a firm tone.

She smirks at him. “Why? So you can soothe your gold-digger’s feelings?”

I can’t help but snarl at that. I’ve been called many things, but I object to that. “I’m not a gold-digger! Joel is my boss.”

“So it’s Joel now, is it?” she raises an eyebrow. “You’re speaking like you’re very familiar with him.”

“How Megan addresses me is none of your business, Caitlin,” Joel says icily. “Just go away and leave Megan alone.”

“Don’t worry, I’m going myself.” I pick up my phone and step around him, giving both Joel and Caitlin a wide berth. “I’m not going to stand here and be insulted by that woman. I’ve got better things to do.”

“That woman?” Caitlin snorts. “I was once married to your boss, and don’t forget that.”

“But you’re not now, are you? You’re just an ex-wife who thinks she still has authority over who your ex-husband talks to,” I turn away. “Good day, Ms. Holland.”

I walk away, not wanting to look back. If I do, or hear anything Caitlin says about me, I’m going to be giving her a slap. It’s very tempting to do that now.

I’m entering the lobby of my building when I hear Joel calling my name.

“Megan! Megan, wait up!”

Bracing myself, I turn around. Joel catches hold of the door and comes to a stop in front of me. He looks just as stressed as I feel.

He holds up his hands. “Look, I’m sorry. I didn’t know she would turn up like that.”

“She sure knows how to make me feel worse than I already was,” I shake my head. “I’m not about to stand there and get insulted, especially when someone’s accusing me of being a gold-digger. I would never do that.”

“I know you wouldn’t,” he replies quickly. “Just ignore the stupid woman. She’s just projecting what she would do in your shoes.”

“I know that, but it doesn’t make the sting go away.”

“I get that. I’m not dismissing that.”

I want to go back to my apartment; having Joel this close to where I live is making the tension build on my shoulders. I’m seconds away from asking if he wants to come up, and that’s not a good idea. I can’t have him come home, especially with Clark still here.
