"So you're saying he likes jazz?" I asked again, still trying to wrap my head around the idea. I'd never in a million years pictured Brian listening to jazz—punk, yes—jazz, never. Owen's revelation about my mate's taste in music only piqued my curiosity further, fueling my eagerness to get to know Brian on a deeper level.

Owen nodded enthusiastically, a grin spreading across his face. "Absolutely, it might be surprising, but Brian loves jazz.”

“Wow, alright.” I grinned. “Hey, there’s that jazz place, the Blue Note. I can take him there. Maybe dinner before that? Or is that too old school?”

“That sounds perfect, Dad. Dinner dates never go out of style. Just make sure they have vegetarian options,” Hayden said.

“Vegetarian?”

Owen laughed. “Yeah, Brian and his whole family are.” He tilted his head. “Huh, it kinda makes sense now with them being rabbit shifters,” Owen said thoughtfully.

“I think that’s just his family, babe. I’ve known some prey shifters who ate meat,” Hayden replied.

I bowed my head in thought. I loved meat. Did this mean I’d have to change my diet? I looked up at Owen. “Does he mind or care if…if I eat meat?”

Owen’s laugh was louder than before. “Your face. Oh my god, you’re killing me today, Edward. He doesn’t mind meat eaters.” Owen continued to giggle, and I couldn’t help but join in. His laughter was infectious. Pretty soon, the entire car was full of guffaws.

After we had all calmed down, I sighed in relief. "Okay, that's good to know. I don't mind incorporating more vegetarian dishes into my life, but I'm not sure I could completely give up meat."

Hayden patted my shoulder reassuringly. "Brian will understand. It's about compromise and understanding each other's preferences."

Owen nodded in agreement. "Exactly. As long as you're open to trying new things and respecting his choices, you'll be fine. Besides, you might discover some new vegetarian dishes you actually enjoy."

“Thanks for all your help,” I said softly.

“You’re welcome, Dad. We’re cheering for you and what both of you happy.” Hayden stopped the car and put it into park before pointing. “Are you ready to see your mate?”

I looked forward, and we had indeed made it to Hayden’s building. My stomach rolled, and my body hummed with nervous energy. I hurriedly nodded and opened my door. I could do this.

As we stepped out of the car and walked toward the entrance of Hayden's building, the lobby door swung open, revealing the familiar face of Henry, the doorman. He greeted us with his usual warm smile and a nod.

“Good evening, Mr. Satchel, Mr. Pryde. It’s good to see you,” Henry said with his usual formality.

It was good to see Henry back at his post. He’d been attacked and almost died in the plot to take Owen from Hayden. I felt so guilty for my ex-wife’s involvement in that whole affair.

I stepped beside Hayden. “Henry, it’s good to see you out and about.”

Henry grinned. “Thank you, Mr. Satchel. I’m glad to be back.”

“I’ve told you many times you can call me Edward.”

“Pfft, good luck with that. I’ve been trying to get him to call me Owen for a while. Hayden said I should just give up,” Owen interjected.

“You really should. Besides, I’d think something was wrong if, all of a sudden, he’d start calling us by our first names. It’s not the Henry way,” Hayden replied.

I shook my head at my son and his partner before focusing back on Henry. “You’re feeling well? All healed?”

Henry gave a slight nod. “Yes, sir. Thanks to your and young Mr. Doy's actions, I’m here today. Also, thank you for covering all my medical bills as well as providing me with aftercare with a professional that I can talk things out with. It’s truly been a godsend.”

“It’s the least I can do. Especially…” My voice trailed.

“It’s in the past now. It’s best we move on.” Henry looked at the bags in Hayden’s hands. “I see you have dinner. I won’t keep you. I hope you all have a pleasant evening.”

“Thank you, Henry. We’ll see you later. Have a good night,” Hayden said before guiding Owen toward the elevators.
