He laughed before leaning up and giving me a quick peck. “When do we have to leave? Are we driving? I’m thinking we’re flying because you said to pack warm. I’m still trying to guess.” Brian gave me a sly grin and wink. “I want my surprise.”
Talon cleared his throat, and I blushed. “We are flying. In fact, our ride is probably already here. Do you have your bag? “
Brian nodded before running back into the apartment. He was back in seconds. I laughed as he wheeled a tiny pink carry-on luggage behind him. His eyes sparkled with mirth when he looked at me.
“What?” he asked, his lips twitching.
I bowed my head and shook it before looking back up at him. “You know the pink goes clashes with your punk flair.”
Brian burst into guffaws. “Yes! My fashionista is here!”
I joined his joy and grabbed his bag before turning toward Talon. Talon had his lips pressed tightly together.
I sobered my expression. Talon’s eyes got wide, and he bowed his head. “One thing about this trip Mr. Roads,” I said, pushing all my authority into my words. “You are not to speak of what you see or hear.”
“Of course, Sire,” Talon said, his voice trembling.
“Good.” I smiled, too, and softened my gaze. “Then laugh. I won’t bite your head off.”
Talon grinned. “Yes, Sire.”
I jerked a nod. “Let’s all get going.”
I turned back to Brian, who wore a silly grin. I reached out my hand, and he instantly intertwined his fingers with mine. I ushered everyone into the elevator and pushed the button for the roof. Brian lifted his brows and glanced at me.
“It’s part of the surprise.”
The elevator car sped to the top, and by the time we were excited, our ride was waiting. It was one of Satchel Industries S5400 helicopters—the gem of our company. It was completely green and used no fuel. It was powered by our self-sustaining batteries. In theory, it could fly forever, but we only used it for short distances. The only downside was the cost. It cost nearly a billion dollars for one.
“This is so amazing!” Brian exclaimed.
I grinned at his exuberance. “Come on, let’s get this show on the road.”
Pulling him toward the craft, the side door opened, and we climbed aboard. I looked to the cockpit, and my trusted pilots, Aden and Jasper, nodded back at me. We quickly stowed our luggage and strapped in. I gave a thumbs up to Aden and moments later, the loud whirling of the massive blades filled the air.
The ride was quick, and we reached the airport for our second leg of the trip. Brian grinned as we landed.
“Why are we landing at an airport?” he asked.
I grabbed my bag and handed it to Talon, who already had Brian’s in hand. “As much as I’d love to take the copter for the full trip, it’s faster and more effective to take the jet.”
“So the place we're going is far,” Brian said to himself. He glanced up at me. “Can I get another clue?”
I peered up in thought. “Hmmm… okay. I got it. Get ready to see the bright lights and awe-inspiring skylines.”
Brian furrowed his brow as I helped him off the helicopter. We quickly transferred to the jet, and we were off in the air again. As we settled into the plush seats of the jet, I could see Brian's curiosity bubbling within him. We spent the time chatting, laughing, and occasionally stealing glances out of the window, mesmerized by the ever-changing landscape below us. Every now and then, Brian would venture a guess about our destination, each more imaginative than the last.
"Are we going to Paris?" he asked at one point excitedly. "Or maybe Tokyo? The bright lights and skyline could fit either of those cities, right?"
I simply smiled and shook my head, enjoying his enthusiasm and determination to solve the puzzle. Hours seemed to slip by effortlessly, with the hum of the jet engines becoming a comforting background noise.
“How about Chicago? It’s cold and has some impressive skylines?” Brian asked again.
I shook my head again, and he frowned before looking back out the window. I glanced at the front of the cabin. Talon had fallen asleep almost immediately after we took off. I remembered those days, sleeping every chance I got during the day and having fun at night.
“New York!”
I turned at Brian’s words, and he looked at me expectantly. “Is it New York?” He asked again.
