“This is not funny, Brian. You better explain everything from the beginning,” my mother scolded.
“I’m trying too, but you keep interrupting,” I retorted.
“Okay, Brian. Your mother and I won’t talk. Explain everything to us from the beginning.”
I took a deep breath. “I met my mate a few weeks ago—”
“A few weeks ago?”
“Let the boy speak, Camile. Go ahead, Brian,” my dad said.
“So, I met him a few weeks ago. I didn’t tell anyone because we were still working things out. We’ve been getting to know one another, and things have been going really well.” I felt Edward touch my shoulder, and I grinned back at him.
“Anyway, earlier today, I found out I was awarded a full-ride scholarship for med school, and I was enrolled in the spring term. Edward, that’s my mate’s name, wanted to do something special, so he whisked me off to New York.” I giggled. “I went skating at Rockefeller Center, Ma. It was amazing.”
“That sounds lovely,” my mom replied.
“I could hear the happiness in your voice. But Brian, are you sure he’s your mate?” My dad asked.
“I’m positive, Dad. We bonded, and it’s the most incredible thing ever. He’s my one and only,” I said quietly while looking back at Edward.
Edward grinned and whispered back, “And you’re mine.”
“Well, it’s settled then. I expect him for dinner with you on Sunday. No excuses,” my mother said, breaking through Edward and my special moment.
“Alright, Ma, we'll be there on Sunday,” I agreed with a smile, glancing at Edward, who nodded in confirmation. “I have to go now, but I promise to call you tomorrow with more details about everything.”
“Take care, sweetheart. We love you and can't wait to meet Edward,” my mom said warmly.
“I love you both too. Goodnight,” I replied before ending the call.
I placed my phone back on the nightstand and turned to face Edward, whose arms were now wrapped around me. “So, dinner with my parents on Sunday,” I said, trying to sound casual, but I could feel my nerves bubbling up. I hadn’t told them who, or rather what Edward was, and I was freaked out that they’d freak out.
“It’s going to be fine, Bunny. They’re going to love me,” Edward said reassuringly.
“I hope so. I have this nightmare that as soon as they see you’re a predator shifter, they’re going to lose it and try to take me away from you,” I said quietly.
Edward tightened his hold. “I’ll never let that happen. We’re in this together—forever—just you and me.”
I smiled and gave him a quick kiss. “You and me—perfect.”
My phone dinged and pulled my attention away. I groaned. It seemed my mother hadn’t gone to bed yet. I reached for it while Edward laughed.
I froze at the message on the screen. Why now? Why the hell is he messaging?
“What’s wrong, Bunny?” Edward asked.
I lifted my phone to his face, and his growl was instantaneous. “What the hell does he want? He had his chance with you, and I’m not giving you back, no matter what!”
I rubbed my hand over his arm. “Easy, I’m not going back to him. You have nothing to worry about. I don’t know why Randy messaged me now. It’s been weeks since we split.”
Edward released a heavy breath. “Are you going to reply?”
I shook my head. “There’s no need. He’s my past.” I leaned against Edward’s chest. “And you’re my future and present.”
Edward hugged me once more, and I felt myself relax in his embrace. This was perfect, and I let my mind wander as I began to doze off. Just as I was about to drift into sleep, a nagging thought pulled me back to the edge of consciousness.
Randy: I need to speak to you. It's IMPORTANT!
I shook my head, trying to push the text away. I'll worry about it later, I told myself. Later. For now, I focused on the warmth of Edward's arms around me and let sleep claim me once again.
