“Kenzy will be fine, I promise,” he interrupts gently before ending the call.
“Are you talking to yourself?” Aunt Elsie asks, a mocking smile playing on her lips.
That’s when a man enters the room. “Camilla, please head to the truck outside. One of my men will take care of the rental later.”
“And you are?” I ask, eyeing him warily.
“Finnegan Gil,” he replies, his voice firm. “There’s a black SUV. Derek and Piper are waiting for you.” He tilts his head toward the door. “We’ll meet you at the airport. I have a few things to discuss with her before I take you to San Fran.”
Knowing that Lysander is already making adjustments to his own plans, I decide not to argue. With a last glance at Aunt Elsie, I follow Finn’s instructions, eager to leave the chaos behind.
Chapter Twenty-One
Lysander
It takes us a couple of days to go through my father’s files. In the middle of our findings, we decide to reach out to two of his brothers—Uncle James and Uncle Jensen. They shared a bond with Dad almost as close as the one I have with Aslan and Gatsby. It’s not like I don’t love my other siblings. I adore them, but Aslan and Gatsby are the ones who hold my secrets.
We’re hoping our uncles can give us more information about what happened with my parents and, if we’re lucky, we could even learn why they never went through with the divorce.
My uncles agreed to join us in San Francisco the following Monday, leaving me plenty of time for me to whisk Kenzy away to San Diego.
Unfortunately, when I extended the invitation to Camilla, she declined it. The response still plays in my head. Her gaze met mine. Her eyes hid a turmoil that reflected my own. “I need to check on Nonna’s house and the Dragos.” She spoke in that soft, melodic tone that tugs at my heart and sends shivers down my spine. “And it’s JJ’s weekend off. I promised we’d spend some time together. Denver is the best option for me.”
Although she spoke the truth, beneath the surface lay the undeniable undertone of avoidance.
It was probably a wise move on her part. The chemistry between us is constantly morphing from a searing, magnetic pull into something deeper—into more. It’s a connection that threatens to blur the lines between us.
The connection is a lot more.
A more that I don’t want to acknowledge.
A more that can break us both if we’re not careful.
Falling for Cami wasn’t an option, and yet, here we are. Facing the inevitable. She’s unlike anyone I’ve ever met. Fate has a way of rewriting stories and changing plans.
My mind can’t stop thinking about her, the small touches we exchange by accident on a daily basis, or the kiss…
I can still taste the memory of her lips on mine, a tender kiss that whispered of hidden desires and an emotion I dare not name. It was a sweetness that left me intoxicated, helpless in its wake, her essence rendering me powerless, her very being holding my heart hostage.
Now, I want so much more of Cami.
I yearn for the warmth of her embrace.
I crave the alluring scent of her skin and the softness of her smile that lights up the darkest corners of my soul.
I ache for her.
I want her in ways that exhilarate and terrify me.
I simply crave all of her.
More of her.
A more that I can’t have.
Her departure for Denver seemed like a wise decision, until it wasn’t. Until that heart-stopping call, her voice laced with fear as she told me someone had broken into the house. The realization that she was in danger sent a shiver down my spine, awakening an instinctive protectiveness within me. It was as if Cami was an extension of myself, as if she truly belonged to me.
“Are you okay, Lysander?” Kenzy’s question gently pierces the haze of my thoughts, drawing me back to the present moment.
