“I know. Looks like she’s at a place called Happily Ever After,” he said, and I took a deep breath.
“Okay, so she’s at work.”
“Yeah, looks like she took an Uber there about an hour ago. Let me check the security cameras.”
I could hear clicking in the background.
“No worries, Logan. I’m almost there. I don’t want her freaking out about me stalking her or something if she finds out I had you hack her.”
“I love you like a brother, man, but sometimes you insult the hell out of me. She would never know I had been there because I am not a noob, and I know how to cover my tracks,” he grumbled.
“Logan, what’s a noob?”
“If you have to ask, you have never played an MMORPG in your life,” he retorted, not that that answered anything for me. I shook my head.
“No, I can honestly say I have not, because I have no idea what that is either.”
“You hurt my head. Alright, I’m in and looking at the tape. You really need to have her get updated software, the video is shit. Alright, looking around the building, but there doesn’t seem to be anyone there. The place is empty,” he said, and I scowled.
“No, that can’t be right. I know it’s early, but she should be there,” I said, a slimy worm of dread beginning to form in my stomach. I suddenly had a horrible feeling, and I wanted to vomit.
“Well, sorry dude, but she’s not. No one is. Let me check the video from the time her phone says she was there.”
I hit the gas and started going about twenty miles over the speed limit. I didn’t give a shit if I got pulled over. The cops could try, but the minute they realized it was me, they would just tell me to leave anyway. No one was going to put me behind bars— most of them were on our payroll.
“Oh shit,” Logan muttered, and I clenched my jaw.
“Say it, Logan,” I ordered.
He hesitated.
“Umm…”
“Say it, for fuck’s sake. I need to hear you say it!” I yelled, already guessing at what I was about to hear.
“She arrives and goes to unlock the front door when a man, a rather big man, comes up behind her, covers her mouth with his hand, and sticks a needle in the side of her neck.”
My mouth went dry, and all I could see was red. There was a loud buzzing in my ears that blocked out everything except Logan’s voice telling me about how she passed out and Rex carried her to his vehicle that was parked around the corner of the building, just out of sight of the main parking lot. He then drove off in a big black truck, heading south.
I arrived at Victoria’s work moments later and pulled up in front of the main door. I got out and stood in front of the door and looked around. I knew they wouldn’t be there. I knew Rex had her and she was gone, but part of me thought that if I stood there, she would come to the door. I would know she was okay, and I could just pick her up and bring her home.
But she wasn’t there.
I looked down at my shoes and saw a cell phone sitting just to the left of the door. It had a purple case, just like the one Victoria had. I bent down and picked it up realizing it must have fallen out of her pocket or something when Rex abducted her.
I felt tears well up behind my eyes, but I pushed them down as far as I could. Crying would help nothing, especially in public.
Reluctantly, I got back into my car, sat Victoria’s phone on the seat beside me, and picked up my phone that I had thrown on the dashboard. Logan was still on speaker, and I could hear him typing and calling my name. I buckled up and sat there wondering what the fuck I was going to do. I didn’t know where she was, and I had no way of getting to her. Rex had stolen my queen, and I had to figure out how to get her back before he did something unspeakable to her.
I shook my head, not wanting to go there.
“Logan, you got anything?” I asked.
“No, not yet, but I had one of my guys put an APB out on the license plate of the truck he was driving. Hopefully, we will get a hit soon. When we do, I will let you know. Hang in there, Gio, okay? Everything is going to be alright. We will find her, I promise.” he said.
I wished that I could believe him.
Suddenly, my phone was vibrating again, and I looked at the calling number. It came up as “unknown”.
