“For diving, certainly. For the rest?” Beverly shrugged. “That’s up to you.”

“He still hanging out at the juice stand in the mornings?”

“You know his schedule pretty well for someone who’s not interested.”

“Self-defense.” I grinned. “Is that a yes?”

“Yeah. You want a scooter?”

I debated. The juice stand was walkable. And walking was going to be safer for me if I was taking Wes along.

He could probably drive his own scooter. That was another option. But it would raise questions since I hadn’t gone that route initially. Ugh. I couldn’t say I regretted giving in to my curiosity about how it would feel to have Wes close. Except maybe I kind of did. Because now I couldn’t get away from the desire to experience it again.

“We’ll walk. Thanks.”

“Sure. When will you head out?”

“Depends on the weather. I’m hoping the storm veers and we don’t have to hunker down somewhere.”

Beverly scoffed. “Good luck.”

“Are you seeing something I’m not?” I frowned. I hadn’t checked the models yet this morning—I wanted to touch base here first.

“Probably not, no. But you know storms do what they want. I have a feeling.”

Hmm. Beverly often had feelings. Sometimes they were right. “I guess I’ll keep playing it by ear. You have room if we need to stick here?”

“Of course. Even if we didn’t, for you I’d figure it out.”

“Thanks.” I reached out and grasped her hand. “Guess I’ll go get the client and head over to see Danny. Tell Jeremiah hi for me.”

“I will. He’ll probably come down to say hi in person once I let him know you’re around. He keeps going on about how he owes you.”

I laughed. “No, he doesn’t. You two would’ve ended up together eventually.”

“Maybe. Maybe not.” Beverly made a shooing motion. “Go do your work.”

With a chuckle, I headed out of the building. The sky had lightened while I was inside and it looked like it was going to be a beautiful day. A light breeze blew, making the trees dance and pushing away the humidity.

I hurried back to the boat and stepped aboard.

“Morning. Everything okay?” Wes looked up from his coffee and clicked to darken his phone screen.

“Yeah. Just checking in and seeing if we were on for diving today.”

“And?”

I nodded and forced my gaze not to linger on his face. I definitely didn’t need to notice how the scruffy stubble on his chin added a reckless air to his appearance. Of course, he looked just fine clean shaven, too. I swallowed. “We need to see if we can find Danny.”

Wes’s eyebrows lifted.

I gave a mental groan. Even I’d heard the distaste in my voice when I’d said Danny’s name. “He’s okay. Just one of those men who thinks he’s God’s gift. It can be exhausting.”

“We don’t have to dive if he’s the only option. Or, if you know the spots, I trust you. We can do without a local.”

I shook my head. “You need a contact. For all of his personality issues, Danny’s a good dive master. Professional on and under the water.”

“But not on land?”
