“All right.” She blew out a breath. “It’s the right choice, but I don’t like it. If the storm doesn’t turn, we’ve wasted your time.”
“No, we haven’t.” I reached out and rested my hand on her arm. The electricity zinging through me at the touch was expected. I just didn’t know what to do about it. Nothing. Of course the answer was nothing. Chemistry was well and good, but practicality mattered, too. And nothing about being attracted to Sunshine was practical.
Her gaze locked with mine.
My mouth went dry. It was all I could do not to lean in and kiss her. Would she let me? Everything in me screamed to find out.
She looked away. Her voice was slightly unsteady as she said, “Okay.”
I shoved my hands in my pockets. “I guess I’ll go let the guys know the change of plans. You said Grenada has a good airport?”
“It does. You should be able to get a flight home on any number of carriers.”
“I, uh, have a plane.” My face burned.
She glanced up, eyes wide, then quickly schooled her expression. A smile hovered around the corners of her lips. “Of course you do.”
“We share it. Me and the guys.” I was defensive and there was no reason for it. It made sense. And we had the money. It wasn’t as though we were skipping meals to look like we had this ridiculous lifestyle. We all lived more frugally than we had to.
“I’m not judging. Promise.”
It had sounded like it, but fine. I nodded. “I’ll let you do…whatever it is you have to do to change our plans.”
I stepped away from the helm area and, after a brief hesitation, headed up the ladder to the top deck. It was still sunny and hot. There was a good breeze from our speed. Looking around, I would never have imagined a storm was on its way.
I plopped on the long, padded seat and opened the group text.
Storm predictions are changing so we’re calling it. The new plan is to make for Grenada and I’ll fly home early.
Tristan
Good. I’m glad. They just bumped it to a cat two.
Wow.
Noah
You didn’t know?
No. I leave that to the experts. Isn’t that what you all told me to do?
Noah
I guess. Just seems like you might also peek at the weather on your own.
Just because you’re named after a guy who built a boat doesn’t mean you know more about sailing than me.
Noah
Har har.
Hey. It’s been a while since I could make a Noah joke. You gotta find fun where you can. Especially when your vacation is getting cut in half.
Noah
I guess.
