“I don’t. I’ll write it up. I don’t think we did anything wrong. And honestly, I don’t see the client trying to come after us for negligence.” Not when I’d inadvertently found him an island to buy. “We watched the weather. Took precautions. The majority of the models showed it heading north.”
Zee nodded, but she watched me.
I shifted uncomfortably in my seat.
“Hmm.”
I took a long drink of water from the bottle. “There’s no hmm.”
A slow grin spread across her face. “Mmmhmm.”
“Zee.”
“Sunny.” She shook her head. “I won’t push. Or say I told you so. But I want to.”
“You’re wrong.” I drummed my fingers on the table. “Anyway, it wouldn’t work. Whole bunch of reasons.”
“Maybe. Maybe not. Doesn’t mean you don’t try.”
I sighed. Hadn’t that been the kind of thing I’d said about Luca? And that had worked beautifully. “Nobody gets a second chance at perfection, Zee.”
“I don’t believe that. But it doesn’t matter what I believe. It matters what you believe. If that’s your stance. You’re right. I’ll leave it alone.” Zee took a deep breath and let it out. “What are your plans?”
“What do we have available?” Work was probably the right choice. If I was busy, I wouldn’t mope.
“There’s recovery, obviously. Did you want to be part of that?”
I bit my lip. I did. But I didn’t. “I can be, if I’m needed.”
Zee shook her head. “I don’t think you are. Though you’d be welcome.”
“Any clients?”
“We have a family coming to town tomorrow who want the sailboat. Just little trips between here, St. Thomas, and St. Croix. You could do it in your sleep.”
I nodded. “That sounds like the perfect thing. Live aboard?”
“No. They have resorts lined up. I guess the wife isn’t a great sailor.”
I wrinkled my nose. That was less appealing. But it wouldn’t be too bad, hopefully, if she stayed where she could see the horizon. “No one else is slated for it?”
“They just called. I haven’t had a chance to look at the roster.”
“I don’t want to butt in line.”
“You aren’t. We don’t work that way, you know that.”
“All right.” I took another long drink. “Sign me up. I guess I’ll find a place to do laundry and crash. What time tomorrow?”
“After two. I’ll email you all the details.” Zee studied my face. “You’re sure you don’t want to go home?”
I wanted to go home. Desperately. But I’d wallow. Nothing good came from wallowing. “Work is better.”
“Okay. You can crash at my place, you know.”
I shook my head. “Appreciate the offer though.”
I couldn’t stay at Zee’s. She might let me off the hook here at the office, but if I was at her place after hours? She’d drag every thought and feeling out of me. Even the ones I hadn’t realized I had.
