I nod. “Yeah. I can track my numbers on any phone.”

“Good.” He removes his cell from his pocket and pulls something up on the screen. “Connect it to mine, too.”

“What?”

“I should have your numbers in my phone. Just in case.”

“In case what?”

“You never know.” He doesn’t even wait for me to explain how to do it before he downloads my monitor’s app to his phone. My blood glucose levels display on his phone screen in a matter of minutes.

“I should’ve done that a long time ago,” he says regretfully.

“I was in a different city.”

He shrugs as if that makes no difference.

“You’re a little low. It’s been a couple of hours since we’ve eaten.”

Without a word, I head to my kitchen and grab a granola bar. I make a show of unwrapping it and taking a huge bite.

A satisfied look crosses his face. “You have enough insulin, right?”

“Diego,” I growl. I’m the one who’s lived with this disease for more than two decades.

“This weekend,” he reminds me, backing off the diabetes stuff. Before I know it, he’s standing in front of me, planting another kiss on my forehead.

“Lock up behind me,” he orders.

Even as I close the door, I can feel his presence on the other side, waiting until he hears the telltaleclickof the lock sliding into place.

“Happy?” I yell out.

“Not yet,” he replies, and I wonder what that response is all about. “But I will be.”

I tap the screen on the side of my door, and the camera turns on. I watch as his long legs carry him away from my door.

All I can think of as I watch him go is,Did I kiss my best friend?

CHAPTER7

Diego

“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today …” The officiant for my cousin’s wedding starts.

I glance at my cousin, and even though he isn’t facing me, his profile reveals the mile-wide smile on his face.

As Kyle and Riley recite their vows, it’s as if they’re the only two people in the world. That thought has me looking at our friends and family watching this union take place.

When my eyes lock with Monique in the second row, I also catch her watching me. Neither one of us look away. The words of the preacher fall into the background as I watch her.

My lips spread without consciously thinking about it. I know I’m giving her the smile I unconsciously reserve only for her. In return, the expression on her face reveals her dimples. A warm sensation rushes through me.

“The ring?”

I startle and turn to see my cousin glaring at me.

Shit.
