“What’s that?”
“You leave that damn bracelet on.”
“Okay… it’s gone already, though?”
“You let me worry about that.”
“Fine. But I have a condition too.”
“What’s that?”
“One moment, please.” I scooted off his lap and with my back turned to him, I quickly made the sloppiest flower crown I’d ever constructed, wincing as I laced one stem through the next.
“What are you doing? You shouldn’t be using your hands like that.”
“It’s fine.”
“Addy, if there’s still glass in there, you’re risking nerve damage, or worse.”
I felt his hands wrap around me, his hands gently holding my forearms, limiting what I was doing.
“Don’t make me regret not firing you.” He breathed into my ear.
“I’m done.” I turned around and presented him with the haphazard flower crown.
“I’ll wear mine if you wear yours.”
“No.” He shook his head.
I reached over and put it on his head anyway, and couldn't help the laugh that escaped my lips. His olive skin, and his dark scruff, contrasted against the white and pink flowers nestled in his tousled undone salt and pepper brown hair.
“Wow, you’ve never looked better.”
“Enjoy this while it lasts, because this is coming off in about two seconds.” He shook his head, but a small smile was on his lips.
He took it off and put it on my head instead.
I scrunched my face. “You’re no fun.”
“On the contrary, I’m the most fun you’ve ever had, remember?”
“Maybe.” I breathed as his lips met mine.
I wasn’t sure exactly where we went from here, but it felt like something had shifted between us. In this quiet moment, we weren't fighting each other. For now.
Just then, we heard a buzz and a click.
“That’s the lock.” Damian was immediately whisking me down the stairs and past the bloody mess.
I clutched his chest as he carried me with long strides down the hall to his office. He set me down in his large leather chair and grabbed the phone.
“Mike?”
“Yeah, Addy had an accident upstairs. Pull the car around. We need to get her to the doctor.”
Damian quickly hung up and dialed another number.
“Dr. Clifton? Hi, sorry for the early hour.” Damian leaned on the desk, watching me carefully as he spoke urgently.
