“Come here,” he said, gesturing for me to come closer.

I was still reluctant to let my guard down. But he was here, miles from his home, and it seemed like he’d come all this way to see me.

“You missed my note,” he said as I walked toward him, letting the door slam behind me. “I debated where to leave it. I thought about the mirror in the bathroom. I finally settled on the middle of the spot where I slept. I was sure you’d turn over and reach for me and see my note.”

He left me a note. I’d checked my phone for a text message. It never occurred to me to search the hotel room. Of course, I would have noticed one on the bathroom mirror when I was brushing my teeth and packing up my toiletries, but apparently I’d missed glancing at his side of the bed before I rushed out of there.

“I thought you saw me as a one-night stand,” I said. “When I woke up and you weren’t there…well, I’ve never had a one-night stand. It’s not really in my nature. But when I met you, there was such a strong attraction…”

“I’m not the one-night stand type, either.” He shook his head. “I know it’s probably hard to believe. It takes a lot for me to open up to a woman, and what I felt for you was something else. I think it was love at first sight.”

Now I really felt like I couldn’t breathe. Had he just said what I thought he said?

“That’s how I felt,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

His face softened a little as he took a step closer. “It’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced. I was devastated when I thought you’d left. I went out to get doughnuts.”

He smiled, but his words took a little while to sink in. Had I heard that right?

“Doughnuts?” I asked.

“This woman named Edna makes these crullers that are out of this world. I usually get there around six o’clock to grab them before the other locals wake up. She sells out quick. I had this image of us eating doughnuts in bed.”

“Sounds sticky.”

“Well, there were other parts to that fantasy too.” He looked around, verifying nobody was in the area, and took another step. “I could take you back to my hotel room and show you.”

“No.” I shook my head, my mouth spreading into a smile. “Cancel your hotel reservation. You’re staying with me tonight. And I may not let you leave.”

“You wouldn’t even have to talk me into it.” His expression turned super serious as he stared down at me. “I’d leave Blackbear Bluff behind for you. That place is in my soul, but I’m miserable without you there with me.”

“You don’t have to leave your town.” I shook my head. “I fell in love with it as much as I fell in love with you. Besides, I have some business there. It’s become clear to me that I need to get to know the residents so I can really sell them to my clients.”

“It’s a lot easier to video chat with your clients in Charlotte than to try to reach out to my neighbors, I assume.”

“You can say that again.” I laughed. “I never dreamed it’d be so hard to track people down. Does nobody in your town do social media?”

“You have a lot to learn about Blackbear Bluff.” He took the final step toward me, putting his arms around me and pulling me toward him. “But I’m happy to show you.”

As he lowered his mouth to mine in a long overdue kiss, I knew I’d finally come home.

EPILOGUE

WILL

Iawoke to the sensation of Kenzie’s mouth around my cock.

Pregnancy hormones. We were midway through the third trimester, and if the previous months were any indication, I wouldn’t be getting much work done.

Speaking of work. “Hey, we’re logging the area just behind Blackbear Falls this week,” I said. “I can’t be late.”

She released my cock to look up at me. “Okay, I’ll stop.”

“No, no, no.” I sat up a little and motioned for her to come this way. “I just mean we shouldn’t waste time on me.”

She crawled up, climbing over me and straddling me. “What did you have in mind?”

“I’ll show you.”
