“Tracker squad Graywolf is moving toward the direction the Russians were last spotted,” Nyx continued. “Between both units, they should find them. Our spies have also spotted their submarine north of Nome.” Nyx flashed a tight smile. “They’re not leaving our shores with your brother.”
“Thank you.” Luc released a long breath, though he wasn’t reassured. He could feel the fear pulsing off Nyx. He was terrified, too, but he had to remain strong for his squadron and his mate.
Nyx blinked at him while shifting from foot to foot. He visibly swallowed. “There’s something else.”
Icy dread solidified Luc’s veins. “What?”
“Agent Johnson dropped off your brothers in Nome,” Nyx said. “They left last night.”
“My brothers?” Luc struggled to speak, panic turning his brain to mush. “On a helicopter?”
“No. On foot.”
Luc threw up his hands, frustration pounding a nail in his skull. His brothers weren’t trained in how to handle military adversaries. “Has anyone scented them?”
“Graywolf squad has reported catching their scent in the area.”
Fuck! He paced the floor, panic making his heartbeat ricochet loudly in his ears. Those few sips of vodka he’d taken made the fire in his veins turn to molten lava. “I should be there.”
“Sir,” Nyx said, turning up his chin, “we can watch her. You know we would protect her with our lives.”
“I can’t leave her.” Gnawing on his lip, he cast another glance at his mate. Great Ancients, he didn’t know if he would survive if anything happened to her while he was away.
Nyx nodded, letting out a wolf-like whimper. “I understand.”
“Is that all you have to report?” Luc asked, his tone coming out sharper than he’d intended.
“Yes, sir.”
Emotion threatening to overwhelm him, Luc turned away, clenching his fists by his sides. “You’re dismissed.”
His heart was as heavy as a lead brick as he sat beside Amara’s bed and took her hand in his while he sent a silent prayer to the goddess to keep their baby safe.
He jerked back when Amara’s eyes flew open. They were foggy for a moment, reminding him of his mother’s elderly dogs, before they cleared and sharpened.
She shot up in bed. “Drasko!”
“Easy, sweetheart.” Grasping her shoulders, he eased her back onto the bed. Was she still dreaming?
She blinked at him. “The trackers lost him, didn’t they?”
He swallowed at that. “How do you know?”
She sat back up, hanging her head in her hands. “Because I saw where the Russians took him, and the trackers weren’t following.”
Luc’s vision tunneled on his mate. “You saw where they took him?”
“There’s a steaming pond and a bunch of old buildings and a church.”
It took him a moment to register what she was saying. “I know where that is.” He’d never brought Amara to the hot springs before, though the trackers knew it well, as it wasn’t far from where they trained.
“Hakon and Rone were there,” she said.
He shot to his feet. “How do you know this?”
“Same way I knew Drasko was being attacked by a polar bear.” Smiling up at him, she placed her hand on her womb. “Our child told me.”
Eyes misting, he fell to his knees, placing a hand on her womb. “Our baby is a seer? Truly, he’s a miracle.” He would forever be indebted to the goddess.
