“If he wants us, he’ll find us,” he said, opening his bedroom door. “Tonight’s been enough of a headfuck. I’m betting he just crashes.”

The meet, yes, they hadn’t talked about Silvio, about what happened before the fire or how they got out.

Though he went inside, she stopped on the threshold. “I want to hear about tonight, what happened with you and Ford.”

“And I want to hear about your unscripted adventure with Sersha, but let’s do it lying down.”

She honestly didn’t get it and looked around until—there was that smile again. “You want me to come to bed with you?”

He lightened. “Ford knows. You wanna sleep alone when you don’t have to?”

No. And not after a night like that. “No.”

“Then come on,” he said, dropping her hand to go inside, leaving the choice hers.

If Ford knew, what harm could it do? There was no point getting caught kissing Jagg if she backed away from the relationship at crunch time.

Exhaling, she went inside and closed the door. Jagg was already stripping off. Oh, sex would be a bad idea. A very bad idea. Talk about rubbing salt in Ford’s wound. If he heard them…

“We should probably keep things cool tonight,” he said, reading her mind.

“All I want to do is lie with you. I was so scared and…”

“Tonight could’ve ended differently,” he said, naked as he pulled back the covers. “I know. Come ‘ere.”

She shed her clothes on the way to the bed and climbed in before he joined her, laying the sheet over her body.

“You didn’t know we were in there.”

“No, I didn’t. I would never have left the building if I’d known there was a chance you’d be in it.” Jagg’s fingers sank into her hair, pushing it back in a calm combing motion. “Why would you take that risk?”

“You were taking a risk upstairs with Silvio. We got a woman out. Not the one we were exactly looking for, but she’s safe tonight because of us.”

“Sersha.” His admiration stayed on her locks. “It was her idea?”

“It was the right idea.” And one she should’ve come up with herself. “Sersha’s better at this than I am.”

“No, Sersha’s better protected.” His eyes narrowed. “You can’t go racing in without a plan like that. What would you have done if you didn’t find someone to save? What if the fire never happened?”

The fire was a foregone conclusion as part of Sersha’s plan, though it did get far out of hand.

“I don’t know. You can’t anticipate every eventuality.”

“You can, or you should, before jumping in like that. All Sersha’s potential outcomes are positive. She threatens someone with her father or Vex’s obsession with her, no one lays a finger on her. You—”

“Belong to you and the Manzanis know that.” She wriggled closer, her fingertips drifting up his torso. “Isn’t that what you said?”

“Were you gonna tell them that in front of Sersha?”

“I don’t know, Jagg,” she said. “Maybe instead of pulling apart the maybes of what I did, we should talk about the definites of what you did. You walked into that building, into a meet, knowing exactly who was going to be there. One of the most dangerous men in the city. In the state. What if Silvio tried to hurt you?” Except, huh. “Did he hurt you?”

“If he wanted me dead, he wouldn’t do it over bourbon. No, he wanted to send a message.”

“Which was? Don’t mess with him?”

“In an ideal world, he wants to keep doing what he’s doing and for others to stop poking around in his business.”

“Did you say we would?”
