And that posed another question. Would she and Jagg ever live together? She couldn’t see him leaving the garage and he wouldn’t kick his oldest friend out. Living with her brother might not be so bad. Though living with him while in an intimate relationship would be a whole other matter.

“Yes, go live there. Anywhere but here.”

“I know how much you need me, sis.”

“Yeah? And where were you when Imogen needed you?” Sersha gestured toward the dining table. “You knew about all this? The cops knew, and they didn’t do anything? You didn’t do anything? You’re a jerk.”

Hence the woman’s opening statement.

“We’re picking it up now.”

“Picking it up?” That sparked optimism. “You’re going to investigate?”

“Not me, homicide, but, yeah.”

“Who in homicide?” Sersha asked.

“Wanstead.”

She glowered. “He’s a bigger jerk than you. He might get the award for it.”

“Yeah, but sometimes it takes a jerk to find a jerk.”

“That’s touching, Lach, real pretty,” Sersha said. “You come up with that yourself?”

She took Lachlan’s hand. “Can we talk about this more in the car?”

“The car?” her father chimed in. “Where are you going?”

“I’m going with a cop, Dad. Not a serial killer or a gangster.”

“It’s been my experience they’re the same thing.”

Whatever bug was in her dad’s ass, he was not letting it go.

“Not my experience,” Sersha muttered absently. Strat glanced at his friend and she shook it off. “If there’s been a break—”

“It’s Mila. They’re going to wake her up.”

“You think she’ll remember anything?”

“I don’t know.”

Shit. What if Mila didn’t remember her or that her friend was dead? Could they miss vital clues? Could the poor woman have to experience the grief of losing her friend all over again?

“One step at a time,” Lachlan said, always steady and calm. “She’s alive. Her health is the most important thing. You can’t rush her or scare her. She won’t be up for much.”

And may wonder why there are people questioning her and guarding her, if Ford’s friends were still at the hospital.

“Have you spoken to her family? Do they know what happened?”

“So far, no one’s showed up,” Lachlan said.

That chilled her. “She’s by herself?”

“Do you want us to come with you?” Sersha asked.

Ford got to his feet, putting her laptop on the coffee table. “Someone else can take porn duty.”
