I enunciate every word. I want to get through to her, but she won’t see reason when it comes to him.
Her lip trembles as she speaks, “Because he’s on the path to getting better.”
“Where’s he gonna stay?”
Her spine straightens and she sends Scott a look before replying.
“I’ll get an apartment.”
My fists clench. “No, you won’t.”
“I. Will.” she says through gritted teeth.
“You won’t. You’re coming to live with me.”
“Knox,” Jason starts but then he’s cut off by Wren.
“What? Since when?”
“Since now.”
Casey hangs his head in his hands.
“You bossy asshole.”
“He needs to stay away, Wren. From you and from my family. He’s untrustworthy.”
“He said he’s done the work. It’s all I’ve ever wanted.”
“I thought all you’ve ever wanted wasme?” I arch a testy brow.
She swats at her damp cheeks, her voice breaking, as she panics,
“It is. I mean, I do want you, but I want him to get better too. Get the help he needs.”
“He should never have come here. God knows what trouble he’s brought with him,” I ground out.
“He said he was missing me and came for a visit. Can’t you calm down for one second and listen to me? I won’t let him come between us again.”
“No, Wren.Iwon’t let him get between us again,” I say, jabbing my thumb to my chest.
She makes a whimpering noise and her body shakes, I try to reach out for her but she forces herself back a step, “I think, umm…we should take a breather…to…to think about everything. You’re giving me an ultimatum.”
“It’s not an ultimatum if it’s protecting you.”
“You’re high! Did you really just say that?” She shrieks.
“I think that’s enough for now. Neither of you are getting anywhere. How about we take Knox to get some food?” Casey says to Wren.
“If…ye-yes. Good idea.” Wren gulps, embarrassment flushing her cheeks and as she completely folds in on herself.
“Wren, will you still be here later on? After you hear what he’s got to say, will you still be here?”
“Yes,” she whispers.
“Okay. I love you.”
She shakes her head, “I love you more than you’ll ever know.”
