“Shut up. Seriously?” He laughed, too.

Setting the glass down on a table so I could open the pill bottle, I nodded. “Yeah. I couldn’t find anything else in the car, so I brought it with me. I hit her in the face hard enough to make her drop her gun. I got a few rounds off, but she got away.” I popped two pills in my mouth and washed them down.

“Wow, sis. I never knew you were a killer.” Drake was teasing me, but the words stung. A killer was the last thing I wanted to be. “I bet Raven’s in trouble with Dad.”

“I don’t know.” I walked to the sink to rinse the glass out, putting the pill bottle in my pocket. I just needed something to do. “She may have come after Daemon on her own since she probably figured out by now that he’s the one who killed her brother.”

Drake let out a loud sigh. “Maybe so, and if that’s the case, she’s probably already on your tail. It’s not like that car sitting out there won’t be easy to track.”

I thought about that for a second. He had a point. “We should probably get out of here. Is he stable enough to move?”

“Not right now.” Taking a deep breath, he moved across the room to where I was standing. “Listen, I understand why you did what you did. It pisses me off, but I get it. I’ll do what I can to help you. The two of you can stay the night, but you need to get out of here tomorrow. Go someplace where no one can find you. Lay low for a week or two, and weigh your options. Now might be the best time to try to talk Daemon into leaving all of this behind. I have no idea what’s going on between the two of you, but if he really loves you, maybe now’s the time to cut ties forever and just disappear, the way you used to talk about doing when you came out to Chicago.”

A deranged giggle left my mouth. “And how did that work out for me?”

“Not very well,” he admitted with a grin. “You came to Chicago for law school, and Dad followed, bringing the whole damn syndicate with him. Still, that doesn’t mean you can’t try again. The way things are between our two families right now, a war is bound to happen. Maybe Daemon will be willing to leave the mess to someone else.”

“No.” I didn’t have to think about an answer. The right one just sprang from within me. “I know he’ll never do that. He’s too involved in all of it.”

“Well, it’s worth a shot to try to talk him into it. At the very least, disappear for a while so he can heal, huh?”

I nodded. Drake had a point about that. It wasn’t going to do anyone any good for Daemon to continue to suffer because of his wounds.

“Why don’t you go lie down on the cot next to his, and I’ll order us some food. You’ve got to be hungry.” Drake patted my arm lovingly.

In response, my stomach growled. I had been so looking forward to that fucking cake. “I could eat.”

He nodded. “Go lay down, sis.”

“Thank you, Drake. I am so sorry I got you involved in all of this. I’ll do whatever I can to make it up to you.”

He shook his head and pulled me into a hug. “It’s all good. We’ll figure it out.”

I hugged him back, tight, and then broke away, heading over to the bed he’d mentioned and lying down next to Daemon.

I didn’t intend to fall asleep, but the moment my head hit the pillow, I found it impossible to keep my eyes open, despite the growling in my belly and the pain in my heart. Daemon was clearly suffering. I should be there for him. I should make sure that he was comfortable and had everything he needed. Instead, I fell into a dreamless sleep, finally letting everything that had happened that day go.

When I woke up, the room was dark save for a small amount of light streaming through a frosted window. I had no idea where Drake had gone to, but Daemon’s eyes were open, and he was looking at me.

A smile broke across my face as I scooted to the edge of my bed, my hand going out to his arm, but he flinched away from me, and that’s when I realized just how angry he was.

At me.

CHAPTER4

DAEMON

Elisa’s hand on my arm caused a sizzle of warmth to spread throughout my body. I wasn’t ready for it, so I tugged away from her. I’d been watching her sleep for a few minutes, not too long at all, but the more I thought about everything that had transpired, the more irritated I became. What the fuck even happened? How did that black-haired bitch find me?

“Daemon?” Elisa’s voice was a warm whisper. “I have some pain medication from Drake. You should take some.” Her eyes darted around the room, as if she was looking for her brother. I didn’t think he was there. Why would he be? Who wanted to sleep in a shitty little clinic when they could go home to their own bed?

“No.” I didn’t want or need any pain medication. Not that my chest and shoulder weren’t killing me, but I wasn’t about to tell her that. “What the fuck happened?”

“Do you remember anything at all?” she asked me, sitting on the edge of her bed.

I nodded, and even that hurt. Groaning, I said, “Yeah, I remember some stupid bitch shooting me.”

“That was Raven,” she explained. “My cousin. Ragno’s twin sister. I figure she must’ve found out that you killed her brother and hunted you down.”
