Sometimes it was easy to see why Ronnie loved her, this was not one of those times.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing is wrong, I just said that.”
“Then why are you calling me?”
I could hear Aaron telling Bellamy to give him the phone, and her grumbling something about a big overprotective teddy bear.
“Hey man, Ronnie fell asleep at her desk.” My best friend's voice filled my speaker. “I would normally take care of it. But Bell and I have thatthingwe have to do.”
Right. That thing, for the baby shower Ronnie doesn’t know anything about. “I’m on my way.”
Drying off as fast as I could, I dressed and grabbed the essentials. Rationally I knew they wouldn’t leave her alone, mainly because I didn’t have a key, but also because she was pregnant, and that was just a common courtesy thing.
The drive wasn’t terrible this time of evening, everyone was settling down ready for bed. I should chap her hide for working this late, especially with only fifteen weeks left of her pregnancy.
I made it in time to see Aaron and Bellamy making out against the side of the brick building they leased.
“Get a room.” I hollered, cupping my hands around my mouth.
Aaron laughed and clapped me on the back when I approached. Bellamy however opened her mouth to reply when Aaron wrapped his hand around her mouth and snuffed whatever the snarky comment would have been.
Her eyes went to slits and it was my turn to laugh.
“I’ll get her home safe.” I vowed. “Y’all go do that thing you have to do.”
The back door was propped open, letting in the cool spring air. I knew where Ronnie’s office was, but I was not prepared for the sight of her asleep on her desk.
Her head was on a pile of paperwork, the slope of her back led to her ass sitting on a rolling chair that looked like she was currently about to fall out of.
The room was small, so maneuvering her without waking her up was going to be impossible. She mumbled a little as I gently shook her shoulder, but didn’t even crack an eye.
“Ronnie…” I said, rocking her a little harder. “Firecracker. Wake up.”
She cursed and turned her head. Gentle snoring filled the room as I looked for another way to get her out. I could lift her, but I didn’t know if I could get around the desk with us both.
I was out of options, and decided to go for it.
Rounding her desk I made a mental note to talk to her about late nights. She couldn’t keep this up, not only for our baby, but also for her health.
She thought I didn’t notice the extra effort it took for her to stand for longer periods of time, shifting her weight from foot to foot.
Looping my arm under her legs I flipped her legs up, and caught her back with my other arm. She was a featherweight in my arms, snuggling deep into my shoulder. Hell, I could get used to this.
She kept mumbling things as I adjusted her perfectly in my arms. When I had her settled, I maneuvered my way around her desk, being sure to avoid hitting her head against the wall. After I made it out of her office, I walked her straight to my truck and tucked her into the backseat where she could lay down.
Quick as I could, I locked the place up with her set of keys I’d picked out of her purse, remembering to grab the rest of her things. The drive wasn’t long, and the doorman let us in since I couldn’t find her key to get into the actual building.
I held her as I waited for the elevator to open, and all the way up into her apartment. I tried a few different keys, why did she have so many fucking keys? I shifted her so I could unlock the door once I found the right one.
She stirred and mumbled something, eyes blinking open and shut.
“Shh.” I said, gently sitting her on her feet so I could get the damn key in the lock. “I’ve got you.”
When I had the door unlocked and could gently kick it open I gathered her back into my arms, and carried her in.
It smelled like the first surf on the beach, like sunlight over salty water. Settling her onto the mattress I found her blankets and covered her up, taking a moment to just look at how beautiful she was. She had this glow about her that I wanted to bottle.
