I shrugged and let him decide. Ultimately it was his sister’s friend that was renting out his newly built cabin. “I think you should make this call.”
“Let’s go.” He said, shifting onto his feet he grasped my hands and hauled me out of the chair, and up to our room to pack our bags.
Giselle called me early the next morning with what little details her friend could give us. The address, a list of local restaurants to try, and the code to get into the lock box for the keys.
After I’d packed the million things Ronnie swore we needed for our weekend getaway into the truck, I padded upstairs to get her going. It was an early morning, and she had been going to sleep earlier, and sleeping in later.
Pregnancy was hard.
She blinked her eyes slowly awake, the early morning rays were warm, and she stretched like a cat, making obscene noises that had me inwardly groaning.
We wouldn’t be going anywhere if she kept doing that.
“Firecracker.” I grumbled. She was insatiable recently, and I was more than happy to oblige. In the mountains. Where I could have her wherever I wanted. “Stop making my dick twitch and get your cute ass in gear.”
She cackled, something that made my heart lift in my chest.
“Bossy.” She groaned, rolling over to her side and shifting her feet out from the covers. She waddled to the bathroom and I went back down stairs to gather our last minute things. Phone chargers, tooth brushes, deodorant. Things we needed this morning, but didn’t want to forget to pack.
“Don’t forget your list!” I shouted at the bottom of the stairs.
“Got it!” She yelled back.
I washed the dishes from last night and put her coffee in a thermos for her on the road. She tattered down the stairs, belly swollen and looking absolutely beautiful. Her hair was piled onto her head, she put on one of the new pairs of leggings we’d bought and an oversized sweater.
Flip-flops had been her go-to for a few weeks now, since she couldn’t reach much on her body. She slipped them on at the door and kissed me when I handed her the coffee. I took the small bag she’d brought and tucked it under my arm.
“Ready?” I whispered against the shell of her ear.
She nodded enthusiastically and practically ran out the door to the truck.
We stopped at Billy’s for her milkshake fix, knowing she wouldn’t be able to get one where we were going. Then we were on the road, heading toward our first of many adventures. Her phone rang and she mumbled, “shit, I forgot…”
“Hey, Bell!” She greeted, “I actually meant to call you.” She went quiet letting Bellamy talk. “Finn is taking me to the mountains!” She squealed.
“Yeah, yeah. We’ll be back Monday.” Bellamy must be giving her an earful. “We will, okay, love you, bye!”
“Bellamy says to be careful, and that she will kill you if anything bad happens to me.” Ronnie rolled her eyes and laid her head back on the headrest. She dozed on and off the whole trip. We stopped a few times for her to pee, but overall the drive was easy.
When we got close I gently shook her awake. She mumbled and blinked open those deep blue eyes.
“We’re almost there, about five minutes.” She’d asked me to wake her up when we got close so she could see the house and the mountains.
I had to admit, the view was unlike anything I could have imagined. Green leaves covered the trees in different shades, granite shoulders lined one side of the winding road, and the clouds hung lower the closer we got to the cabin.
It was picturesque, as Ronnie so deemed it when she finally roused from her nap. Her hair was a messy nest on top of her head, and her clothes had shifted from all her movement while she slept.
But with the light filtering through the clouds, she looked more beautiful than I’d ever seen her. Relaxed and content, she looked as if she were finally free. Like she wasliving.
“What?” She asked, covering her mouth with her hand. “Do I have slobber on my chin?”
I chuckled and shook my head, because of course that would be the first thing she thought of.
“No.”
“What is it?” She hurried to flip the visor down.
“You’re beautiful.”
