“But Koffitz said – ”
“I don’t care what Koffitz said. There’s no reason to run halfway across the world because Connor’s father mentioned two cities and an African country.”
Do you have contacts in those areas of the world?
“Why?” Sebastian asked.
You could get them to investigate for you.
“Investigate what?!” Sebastian fumed. “A couple of vague cargo manifests?”
“Eve,” I said. “Do we have a better lead?”
Not at the moment, no.
“Then I want to go to Venice.”
Sebastian stared at me. “Are you out of your mind?”
“You don’t find any of this the tiniest bit suspicious?”
“Suspicious, yes. Enough to go to the ends of the earth to track it down? No.”
“This is the only thing Eve’s found on Miranda.”
“And it’s probably nothing.”
“Miranda went to huge lengths to hide those bank accounts,” I insisted.
“Miranda goes to great lengths to hide everything.”
“Those companies have never had dealings with the Templeton Group before. ”
“Maybe she’s taking advantage of her in-laws’ great discounts on shipping,” Sebastian said sardonically. “Like using someone else’s FedEx account.”
“Mr. Templeton was really bothered by whatever was going on in those three places,” I reminded him. “What if it could be the information we need to free Connor?”
“I doubt anything you find in Venice will make a New York judge reconsider the case against Connor.”
“But what if one of us can find the evidence that’ll take Miranda down?”
Sebastian frowned. “What do you mean, ‘one of us’?”
I took a deep breath and steeled myself for the reaction. “I want you to go to Tanzania, and Johnny to go to Tokyo.”
“Oh hell no!” Sebastian snapped, outraged.
“Why not?”
“Because this is idiotic!”
“Why?”
Sebastian put his hand to his forehead and closed his eyes, as though he were in a tremendous amount of pain. “The most probable scenario is that we find a bunch of legitimate businesses moving machinery, in which case we’ve just wasted a lot of time, not to mention opening ourselves up to legal action for hacking bank accounts and other companies’ records. The worst scenario is that we find something incredibly dangerous, in which case we could wind up dead.”
“Connor could wind up dead from another murder attempt if we don’t do something!”
“All we have to do is wait for the evidence on the limo to come through and he’ll be cleared.”
