I awoke with a start and put out my hand.

Connor’s side of the bed was empty.

The room was still pitch black. I looked at the clock on the nightstand. 4:37 AM. Way too early for Connor to start his day.

I went to the bathroom, just to check.

No Connor.

I put on a robe and went out into the dark penthouse. I looked in the kitchen, in the study, in the den, in the living room.

No Connor.

I opened the door of the penthouse and peeked into the foyer that led to the private elevator. Leo, the tall, thin black bodyguard, was right outside the door.

“Have you seen Connor?” I asked.

“He’s downstairs at the pool,” Leo said.

“He’s alone?” I asked, alarmed.

“No, Armin’s with him.”

“Oh… thank you.”

I walked down the hall towards the elevator.

“Ms. Ross?” Leo said.

I turned around. “You can call me Lily.”

“I just wanted to say I was real sorry to hear about Mr. Templeton’s father.”

It took me a second to register what he meant, since for me, ‘Mr. Templeton’ was Augustus Templeton. But Leo was referring to Connor as ‘Mr. Templeton.’

“Thank you,” I told him.

He nodded his head, and I continued my walk to the elevator.
