“It’s just so crazy to think I went from living in a horrible apartment and working in a club yesterday, to this.”

Sara laughed.“I was working in one of their restaurants.Ethan came in to talk to the manager who had been stealing from them.I hid because it sounded intense, and I recognized Ethan’s name as being one of the Macleans.”

“They really are mafia?”

Sara nodded.“Yes.But they’re not cruel, and they don’t hurt innocents. In fact, they go after ones that do.”

“Did he find you?”

“Yes.I jostled the shelving I was hiding behind, and a can fell off.Ethan and a few others were there staring down at me.I thought I was a dead person.I even told Ethan that if he had a decent bone in his body, he’d shoot me and not hurt me.”

Nala’s eyes widened.“You asked him to shoot you?”

“Yes.Up until then, my life had been … hard.I certainly didn’t expect anything like this to happen.”

“My life has been a challenge, too.”

Sara squeezed her arm.“We have a lot in common.I think we’re going to be good friends.”

“I can’t remember when I had one.Maybe in grade school,” Nala said.

“Life gets in the way.”Sara walked to the bed, where there was a stack of things.“Drew wanted me to bring you some things.”

“That’s too much.”

Sara snorted.“No.Ethan won’t stop buying me things. My closet is full, and I’m not going to wear half of them.”

“Are you sure?”

“You’ll be doing me a favor,” Sara said and lifted one of the dresses and put it up to Nala’s chest.“The color of this one brings out your pretty eyes.”

“Thank you.”

“Go try it on.”

Nala walked into the bathroom and closed the door. She pulled the dress on and sighed. She’d never seen a more beautiful dress before. It made her feel like a princess. Her gaze went to her hair, and she grimaced.Hell, it looked awful.

“Come out and let me see,” Sara called.

Nala walked out.

Sara smiled.“Oh, that looks so good on you.”

“It’s beautiful.”

Sara went through the clothing.“This would look fantastic on you.”

“Sara…”

“What?”

“Is there a way I can get my hair back to its natural color? It’s not really blonde.”

Sara laughed.“I figured that out. We’ll get that taken care of today. We’ll strip the blonde color out and then condition it.That should bring back the natural shine.”

“That would be wonderful. Also, my name isn’t Scarlet.”

Sara walked to her and hugged her.“I knew that, too.I don’t have to know until you’re ready.”
