I heard Malachi’s whinny of laughter as my stomach felt like it dropped to my feet. I let out my magic to steady me and slowly bring me back to land. He had to have chucked me twenty or more feet into the air.
I vaguely noticed Kian diving for the board.
I used my magic as a board itself and steered myself for the shore, but Kian was nowhere to be found as I took my first step onto the sand in victory.
I turned and saw the board in Kian’s mouth, and he seemed to be grinning from around it.
There was no way. “Did—did you catch that?”
Yeah!
Dex was laughing not far from where I stood, the sort of laugh that couldn’t be shut off, a deep belly laugh.
And it was all too hilarious to consider. Not only did dragons exist, but I was wave riding with two of them, having the time of my life.
Kian sauntered over to where I stood laughing, and belly flopped onto the sand between Dex and me, successfully depositing my wave board next to me.
I slumped down next to him in the sand, laughing too hard to stand.
Savanna arrived on the other side of me, and she too seemed to be smiling or laughing.
So there we sat, taking in the waves and sun glinting off the sea, laughing our butts off, but mine and Dex’s were the only ones out loud.
A shadow appeared over me, so I tipped my head back, readying to say something terribly witty to Malachi.
But it was not Malachi. It was a dragon queen looking none too pleased.
“Hi,” I offered, still smiling.
Her sharp green eyes seemed to survey me.You gave me quite the fright.
I fought and failed against the smile tugging on the corners of my mouth as I tried to deadpan, “Not usually what women say to me first thing in the morning.”
Kian made a choking, wheezing noise before rolling to his side with more laughter. Dex wiped at an eye.
Malachi did not inform me of this little... excursion, she explained.
I stood and looked behind her to where he stood, grazing on some grass while he waited. He either didn’t hear our conversation or was choosing to ignore it. Likely the latter. “Sorry to worry you again.”
That was—She stopped as if she didn’t know what to call what she’d just seen.
“That was a hell of a good time,” I finished for her.
Agreed,Kian sent all of us.
Double agreed,Savanna added.
I used my magic to warm my skin and dry off my shorts.
The queen stood there, watching my magic travel over my body.
“You’re staring,” I offered as I ran a hand through my drying hair.
It was the magic, she said with a huff.
I snorted a laugh. “Keep telling yourself that, sweetheart.”
She rolled her eyes.
