“I don’t understand that.”

Chandler chuckled. “Yeah, you have to like sleep for that. What do you need?”

“Why do you think I need anything?”

“Because I know you.”

“Fine. I need you to look into a guy for me.”

“Knew it.” There were some rustling sounds. “Who?”

“I only have a first name. Leo. But he works at Reuben’s Real Estate here in Redwood.”

Chandler chuckled. “You never make my job easy, do you?”

“Where’s the fun in that?”

Footsteps sounded outside the door, and a second later, Hannah stood there wearing just his T-shirt, which went down to her knees. His dick twitched while something hard and territorial burned in his chest.

“I’ve got to go, Chandler.”

“You wake me up at the crack of dawn and there’s no, ‘How are you? What are you up to today?’”

The corners of Erik’s lips pulled up. “You sound good to me, and you’re probably working.”

“Fuck, you’re right. I need to get a life. I’ll let you know if I find anything.”

The call ended, and Hannah had all of Erik’s attention. She crossed the room slowly, her hair tumbling over her shoulder like a waterfall, her features soft.

The second she was close, he rose and tugged her into his body. “Good morning, Angel. How are you feeling today?”

“Good. Thanks to you looking after me.”

He shook his head. “I didn’t do anything.”

She laughed. “Yeah, you only pulled me from the water, got me warm, and woke up with me every time I had a low last night.”

A rumble sounded from his chest. She shouldn’t have had to deal with any of that.

Her features smoothed. “I need to visit Brigid today.”

He frowned. “Is she okay?”

“I don’t know. I’m worried about her. She was drinking a lot last night and saying something about a mistake. This James stuff has hit her really hard.”

“I’ll drive you.”

She opened her mouth like she was about to argue, then snapped it closed and nodded. When she rose to her toes, he didn’t hesitate—he lowered his mouth and kissed her, letting her take away all his worries for a brief moment.

Hannah keyedin the code to the side door of Brigid’s apartment building, Erik watching her closely. She didn’t miss the fact that he was also watching other things. The street around them. The parking lot at their backs.

When they stepped inside, they took the staircase to the fourth floor, and Hannah knocked on Brigid’s door. It was ten thirty. She’d tried not to come too early so her friend could sleep in, but she hadn’t been able to hold off any longer.

When no one came to the door, she banged harder, then tugged her phone out and called Brigid. She thought it was going to go to voice mail, when Brigid finally answered.

“What?”

The corners of Hannah’s lips twitched. “I’m at your door. Open up.”
